Polly?

Hello All
I love the name Polly as I had a good friend as a child with that name - and its not in any of the 'most popular' lists I have found for the last few years. But I am worried - do people not use it because of Polly Pocket?

My husband thinks it might not be used because of the chemical prefix, eg polystyrene, polyester etc etc. I think thats nonsense.

Are either of us right? Is it a bad name to give a little girl?

Advice please!!!

thanks so much
Nicky

I have a 21-month-old Polly so obviously I think it's a great name! She is Polly Jean, partly after PJ Harvey and also cos my mum was Jean.

We sing Polly put the kettle on and Miss Polly had a dolly all the time, I think she thinks I made them up just for her . My nieces call her Polly Pocket but I just think it's sweet. There are also loads of kids book with the character Polly that I have found - eg Polly Jean Pyjama Queen and Princess Polly's Potty.

People always comment on how pretty and unusual it is, despite being a well known name. Only problem is she often gets called Holly or Poppy as there are loads of them.

My friend called her DD Polly. I really didn't like the name. I actually thought she was joking at first. I suggested Poppy instead.

And do you know what? I was WRONG! Polly has been around for a while now. I got used to the name pretty quickly, and now I love it! It's much nice than Poppy IMO. I don't know what I was thinking!

Ignore the naysayers, it really is a lovely name.

I like it!

skymoo · 05/01/2010 23:52

Polly is lovely - also like Nancy and Flossie

zozzle · 05/01/2010 23:48

Love it! I think PJ Harvey too ... and she's cool.

put the kettle on
parrot

sorry, too many teasing opportunities for my liking

I love the name Polly and it would definately have ben on our shortlist for DD had DH's step sister not been called it.
It's far too under-used in my opinion along with Sally which I also love.

My grandmother and great grandmother were both Mary Ann Elizabeth's and both known to all as 'Polly' or 'Pol' (south London!)

I didn't know about my gt grandmother until I started researching my family tree and met someone who knew of her (and only knew her as Pol!)

I like the name for what it's worth ...

BonjourIvresse · 27/11/2009 11:05

Nirvana killed the name a bit for me, and I'd want to put something more formal on the birth certificate, then have Polly as a nickname.

JoeyBettany · 27/11/2009 10:51

Also we are looking forward to her going to pre school and singing all the songs with her name in!

JoeyBettany · 27/11/2009 10:49

I have a 10 month old Polly, not short for anything! We do, hwever, frequently refer to her as 'little Poll'

I also know a middle aged Polly, short for Olwyn apparently.

at how anyone can think Polly is a silly name but not Dolly ?

I really like it, I know a Polly, she was at Uni with me.... very very pretty and nice girl. My parents had a Pekingese called Polly.

thedollshouse · 26/11/2009 15:51

I love it. It was on our list. I know one adult called Polly but have never come across a child by the name.

bogie · 26/11/2009 15:50

It just makes me think ''Polly want a cracker''

MrsBadger · 26/11/2009 15:48

yes, was originally a nickname for Mary (somehow!)

I quite like it, but like Sally more

If you're into folk music (as i am) then Polly isn't a silly name at all; it's traditionally english and historic and wonderful.

which is why i'm trying desperately to find a way to fit it in as a middle name for dd2, if indeed it is a dd.

choosyfloosy · 25/11/2009 12:20

I know a very cool 9-year-old Polly. Excellent name IMO.

CokeFan · 25/11/2009 12:17

Actually, I think Polly is "short" for Mary. If you put Polly into a family history search it comes back with results for Mary as well.

I quite like it - really wouldn't have gone with our surname or my maiden name though.

ninedragons · 25/11/2009 12:15

Polly Esther is a big fat no. Polly with a sensible middle name is cute, though I like the suggestion of using it as a nickname for Penelope.

MrsMattie · 25/11/2009 12:08

I really like Dolly, too. Quite funky. Doll is a cool nickname!

flannelfish · 25/11/2009 12:04

I love the name Polly and can't believe it's not more popular. It would be near the top of my list if my friend's daughter wasn't called it. Don't agree you need a more proper name on birth certificate - just don't see the point of that and Polly is a perfectly acceptable name on its own. Is definitely not silly. Polly Pocket woudn't bother me (mind you I'm thinking of calling my baby Kitty and I have Hello Kitty to contend with. Kitty and Polly similar sort of names I think.) and the prefix poly has never crossed my mind before.

MrsJohnDeere · 25/11/2009 10:59

MIL, who is known as Polly (or Pol) is really a Paulina.
