Louis is a lovely name, Oscar has been so popular over here (Ireland) for about the last decade, I know loads of them and wouldn't consider it because of that, also because Ocasr Wilde had such a tough life, it seems to me like a name which carries burden.

spiderlight · 08/04/2010 23:41

DH is a Louis so I'm biased. Everyone spells it Louie, though, which he hates.

woofie · 08/04/2010 23:21

Oscar It has surged in popularity recently (as has Louis), but is a lovely, classic, strong but cheeky type name. Suits my ds anyway (no bias here) and he's the only one in his nursery school.

I really like both but I love louis. Really liked this name for ds2 but dh said no...

MarshaBrady · 08/04/2010 15:40

Louis, I prefer Oscar but there are too many.

LisaClapham · 08/04/2010 15:32

I love Arthur, so would definitely use that. Oscar is very common at the moment there are 5 I know of under 18 months old at the mo

birdbrain36 · 08/04/2010 12:42

How funny! This is the exact dilemma we faced and I sometimes still wonder if we go got it right. Our boy ended up being Louis Oscar.

Since then I have met sooooo many little boys called Oscar that I feel on balance we made the right choice in putting it second, whilst I still love the name very much.

I should warn you though, you won't believe how many people can't pronounce Louis and insist on a "s" sound at the end. It will drive you crazy!!

CirrhosisByTheSea · 25/11/2009 13:17

They're both really lovely names. I think for me Louis just edges it but both lovely.

MummyTumble · 25/11/2009 13:08

we had a family dog called Oscar too....Like Louis but I think its quite popular (not that it bothers me)and I can't stand Louis Walsh! But once x-factor is over i wouldn't associate it then [smil]

teddymummy · 23/11/2009 16:54

one of my DS is called Oscar John- but that was four years ago when it was quite unusual. We have friends with Oscar the dog though! Like Louis as well- good luck!

pagwatch · 23/11/2009 16:47

Louis is lovely. DS2 is a 6ft 16 year old and it suits him. I don't think of Louis as being a childs name?

He remains the only Louis we know and theonly Louis in his school.
I think Louie is becoming popular

I prefer Oscar - think it works better as a child and an adults name. Don't know any around here.

I know 2 Louis's but I think popularity of names depends on where you live. I find it difficult to imagine a man called louis (other than a French one).

Names are very personal - go with what you like - neither name would scar the child for life - unlike some of my hormone driven ideas!

BonjourIvresse · 23/11/2009 09:20

I like Louis. All the Oscars I know are naughty!

susiey · 23/11/2009 09:17

I know loads of Oscars that have been born in the last few months its a great name as long as you don't mind it being so popular

MintyCane · 23/11/2009 09:00

Oscar - I love it I don't know any at the moment

LittleMissWorryHead · 23/11/2009 08:57

Louis is no 59 and went up one place last year, Oscar is no 30 and went up 11 places.

Its rising popularity put me off and my little boy was called Jacob instead...

I would def go for Louis. It would worry me with Oscar that its a bit of a "trend"

Louis is fab

qwerty123 · 22/11/2009 23:52

Oscar

needanameforboy · 22/11/2009 23:42

Does anyone know which is more popular?

lovemybabyboy · 22/11/2009 22:48

Definitely Oscar....but I'm biased

But I do think Louis is lovely too.

ImSoNotTelling · 22/11/2009 14:01

I prefer louis personally. I know a little oscar and a little louis though, I would say they are definitely both popular at the mo

magbags · 22/11/2009 13:49

Love both but would go for Louis. I know a little boy called Louis and he is gorgeous.

ChickandDuck · 22/11/2009 11:44

Oscar - not heard it before (smile)
