Can you have Josie as a stand alone name?

Or does it have to be short for Josephine? Can it be short for anything else? I love Josie, but not sure about Josephine as don't generally like diminutives added on to male names. But should she have the flexibility of using both full name and nick name?

Josie is the correct feminine form of Joseph.

It is not short for anything.

Josephine (first attributed to Napoleon's mistress) is actually the diminutive of Josie, not the other way round.

Ironic that there should be a query on here as to whether this is a "proper" name, in the era of "Jack", "Freddy", "Ollie" etc.

As to the calling your child Josie - you can't go wrong with it really. It is Biblical, un-pretentious and whilst slightly middle-class would not really give any clues away as to age or social standing.

My dd is Josie, just Josie, she was named after one of my close friends, who is also just Josie. I love it.

the reason I asked about pronounciation is that I was very (very) nearly going to call my DD Josie, but I got put off by everyone who I mentioned the name to pronouncing it differently, as either Jo-zee or Jo-see... and I guess I didn't want DD to have to go through that all her life. It is a lovely name though!

José (pronounced the same as Josie) is my grandmother's name. It does look like 'Hosay' spelt that way, though!

My fabulous little sis is called Josie as stand alone and she is now 30 and always loved it.I am also v jealous as I got the Katie/Katherine thing and it is a pain in the ass having 2 names! Go for the short version, I hate all that "may want to use the longer version". Anyway rant over! Josie is a cool name.

I don't see why not; very nice name on its own. There's one on my street, age 5. Her sister is Sadie, not short for anything either.

There are two Josies at the school I work at and neither is Josephine, just Josie. I love the name, I might have called DD Josie, but it just doesn't go with our surname.

My niece is called Josie... she's 2 and extremely cute!
