Is it really that bad?

I have an 8 month old DD and whenever I tell people her name they give me a funny look and ask "Really?" as if I am joking. Either that or they start singing one of three songs. I have even had one lady say "Well I have never heard a baby called that before!" in a rather snotty voice.
I think it's a lovely name (obviously) but just wondered what the general opinion is.

Her name is Lola btw

I love Lola - in fact I love a lot of girl's names starting with L like Layla and Liya. You can't please everyone. As long as you are happy with your choice, that's what counts. (Says she who has spent the last week obsessing over the "it is too jewish-sounding-ness" of Reuben"!)

MrsWillis · 15/11/2009 09:54

Bellissima - my DS is called Joe I have a boring job too!

I used to consider 'Lola' was one of those names which told you about the parents - well of course all names do to some extent - but Lola went with 'Sadie', 'Ruby' and, for boys, 'Joe' as being 'I've got a boring job really but like everyone to think I'm one of those cool art school types and I'm giving my kids these cool names' etc etc.

But since the brilliant Charlie and Lola I just think it's great and not so pigeon-holed.

girlsyearapart · 15/11/2009 08:21

No it's lovely we have a Lola who is 2.2.

We had her name picked out before we were married/pregnant/having a girl/had ever heard of Charlie & Lola in one of those conversations about having children.

And our nephew is Charlie.

Marioandluigi · 15/11/2009 08:15

I love it, I think its pretty and there is a little girl at DS's nursery called Lola and she is very pretty and sweet.

I do associate it with Charlie and Lola, and maybe people think you took it from there? but if you think about 20 years ago how many girls were called Kylie or Charlene after neighbours its nothing new

nomoralfibre · 15/11/2009 08:03

Ignore them. It's a nice name.

I think it's a pretty name & come across it quite a bit where we live (west London). Also think people are incredibly rude when they comment in such a way about a name like that!

Mmmango · 15/11/2009 04:25

I have a name that people of a certain age associate with a crap song. That's what I say now when it happens - "Oh, people of a certain age always sing that" (bright smile) - shuts everyone up quick.

Lola's lovely, don't worry about it

CheerfulYank · 15/11/2009 02:45

I think of Charlie and Lola too..."I have this little sister Lola. She is small, and very funny."

I think it's beautiful.

Mezley · 15/11/2009 02:41

sweet. think charlie and lola. Lovely lovely !!

BabyDancer83 · 15/11/2009 02:33

I'm quite surprised that people wrinkle their noses at it, it's getting popular these days and even in the last 10 years or so it hasnt been that unusual, and, it's a very pretty name! try to think about the people who say "aaww that's lovely", rather than those that sing it back to you

scottishmummy · 15/11/2009 00:31

MrsWillis · 14/11/2009 23:17

A song called 'Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets'

I had never heard of it before until I had her and people would start singing it when I told them her name.

I love it! You always meet mad old ladies when you have a baby with you. Why is that?

displayuntilbestbefore · 14/11/2009 22:51
