Due date in a few weeks and we still haven't decided on a girls name.

Our (current) shortlist is

Martha
Marla
Jemima
Clara
Maria
Leah

What are your thoughts on these names? Middle name is probably going to be Elizabeth. We have a DS called Ethan. Do these names 'go' with Ethan?

TIA

malung · 28/11/2009 21:41

Clara is a gorgeous name.

minkiemoo · 26/11/2009 22:08

Love love love Jemima - that was one of my top names for my DD but DH vetoed it (boo!)

Buntytea · 24/11/2009 15:30

Another vote for Martha. Like Clara too but am always confused how to pronounce it - have 2 friends with that name, 1 says hers Clare-ugh and the other says Clar-ugh

Don't like Leah, sorry

teameric · 24/11/2009 15:21

Love them all. Personally I think Marla goes best with Ethan. Good luck!

Skegness · 23/11/2009 16:18

Martha- like
Marla- not really
Jemima- no
Clara- ok
Maria- like (but adding 3 letters to make Marianne transforms it into a completely ace name imo)
Leah ok (but don't like the fact that she's the 2nd best wife in the OT story)

mathanxiety · 23/11/2009 16:11

Martha -- don't like, reminds me of hens, don't know why
Marla -- don't like, reminds me of Marla Maples, Donald Trump, the 80's, hairspray
Jemima -- like a lot
Clara -- love
Maria -- meh
Leah -- like

emsyj · 23/11/2009 14:12

Don't like Leah at all, or Maria, the others are all nice. My mum had an Auntie Clara whom she was extremely fond of. By all counts she was a lovely lady, though I never knew her as she died long before I was born. Do like Clara and Jemima best, Martha very very popular which would put me off. Marla is nice, also unusual.

Elsa123 · 23/11/2009 12:42

I think that Maria Elizabeth sounds like the best combination and its really pretty too.

Vivia · 23/11/2009 12:32

Clara

I love Martha I think it is really beautiful, the other names are nice, not too keen on Jemima though.

jellybeans · 23/11/2009 00:20

Martha not keen, very in now
Marla quite like
Jemima really dislike
Clara like
Maria dislike, old fashioned
Leah like

I like Clara best, goes well with Elizabeth and Ethan.

qwerty123 · 22/11/2009 23:58

Martha (try to twist your DH's arm!) - it's a great name.

QandA · 22/11/2009 07:10

I like Marla, unusual, but not odd iyswim.

I also like Clara.

skymoo · 22/11/2009 01:33

not keen on Jemima (she will probably call herself Mimi once she gets older) but the others are lovely

I love Olivia fwiw

mrsjuan · 22/11/2009 00:52

Lovely names. I like really like Marla and Clara- both were on my list although they are not great with our surname.

busymummy3 · 22/11/2009 00:48

i like leah think the others are too old fashioned

doubleexpresso · 05/11/2009 20:47

Ethan and Martha has a nice ring to it.

bellissima · 05/11/2009 13:05

Agree JustChances - too many ths, or possibly fs with Martha and Ethan. And is it just me or does it sound a bit Emmerdale?

Clara I love love love. was on my shortlist.

thirtysomething · 05/11/2009 12:55

All lovely - least keen on Marla and Jemima

Love Martha and Clara in particular - and am sure Clara is due for a BIG comeback v. soon

All go nicely with Ethan too

Leah isn't common at all round here - I've also seen it spelt Lea which is nice too.

Occurred to me that Hannah/Anna is a similar-ish name too and would go with Ethan

JustChancesAndChoices · 05/11/2009 12:50

I LOVED Martha when I was pregnant with DS2 but DH didnt & also whenever I mentioned it people would say "Marfa?", and that would really bug me. I suppose you already get that with Ethan - would you want it twice over???

Leah is very common around these parts.

I went to school with a Marla but it seems like the "odd one out" to me - bit American and the others classic British

The other names are all lovely in there own right to.
