What does everyone think of the name Flora? I love it and am considering it for my baby (if it's a girl obviously)

Just need some opinions. DH is a bit useless...

love the name but would never use it because of maragrine links.

also love florence and wish had used it for dd

Tarantella · 17/11/2009 07:01

My teenage Flora has never had any problems worth speaking about regarding the margarine associations, I had never heard of the spreads easily strapline anyway, only read about it on Mumsnet!

She is named for the Scottish connections, Flora MacDonald was the Jacobite heroine who rescued Bonnie Prince Charlie and she was brunette! In both her previous and current large schools she has been the only Flora.

ihaveaheadache · 14/11/2009 17:08

Well she'd be growing up in a household of butter eaters so won't get the marg insults...can't believe people eat margarine anyway, yuck!

Very pretty, but bear in mind that she might spend her life afraid of doing anything pro-active...

BettyButterknife · 13/11/2009 18:58

I love it. People will always find something to poke fun at with every name, or if not the name something else.

I would go for it, in fact I'm going to add it to my list. I love Clover too

CantSleepWontSleep · 13/11/2009 17:35

Another spreader.

GhoulsAreLoud · 13/11/2009 17:28

I love it.

MamaLazarou · 13/11/2009 16:47

Spreads easily.

LuckyC · 13/11/2009 16:38

Flora gorgeous lovely balanced two-syllable name. Freya ditto without the margarine connotations. x

twolittlekings · 03/11/2009 21:34

I LOVE this name but when I once said that as a potential name for my DS1 (at the time not sure if boy or girl!) she said "flora spread your legs" which really upset me.

I still think it's a beautiful name

ihaveaheadache · 03/11/2009 21:29

Thanks everyone, some great feedback on this name. I love it so much and can't seem to love any other girls name as much at the moment...now all I have to do is convince dh!

I have a Flora too - she is 28, tall, beautiful, posh but brunette.

monniemae · 03/11/2009 16:20

I know two Floras. Both 30, both tall, blonde, beautiful and posh. Both love their name and not fazed by spreading puns...

GrendelsMum · 02/11/2009 18:51

Flora's lovely. And there's nothing wrong with Marg as a name either!

Allets · 02/11/2009 10:28

Flora is a lovely name

autumnsun · 02/11/2009 10:13

I loved it and it was on my shortlist for our second daughte. Flora is the goddess of spring and she was due end Feb/early March so quite appropriate. DH said she would get called Marg though so it put me off. I think if I ever had another I would choose it though as still love it.

vampiredogstar · 01/11/2009 23:31

if I was introduced to a little Flora I would not in a million years think marg. tis muck anyway.

very good name choice.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/11/2009 23:26

Nice.

MRSwereWOOLFhasabroomofherown · 01/11/2009 23:13

Love Flora, was my cat's name ( would have considered using for a girl otherwise).
We were constantly asked how it was spelt "as in the margarine?" but still liked all the same.

Sazisi · 01/11/2009 23:11

I love it
doesn't make me think of marge - I'm a butter lady I'll have you know!

lol at Brightfield tho

Divatheshopaholic · 01/11/2009 23:08

Flora is cute, i bet people will think marge

Brightfield · 01/11/2009 23:07

I really like Clover too

GossipMonger · 01/11/2009 23:06

TheMoistWorldOfSeptimusQuench · 01/11/2009 23:03

Love it! I have a Flora

Most people say they think it a lovely name, and no one ever mentions margarine (to our faces, anyway ). Do people still eat Flora marge anyway? Hideous stuff.

MustNotEatCake · 01/11/2009 22:51

I know a few Floras. I really don't like it, sorry.

ditto Florence.

(Flora = margarine = easy to spread. Not nice for a young lady to have a name with such connotations )
