Boys names, and what do you think about Rowan?

So sorry just seen the thread is about 100 years old haha (well, 11 years old). Wondered why people thought the name was unusual, makes sense now I know it's historic thread.
Sorry not sure how this happened.

I was considering this name but sadly Rowan is not unusual at all anymore so not one to pick if, like you say, you're wanting something a bit different. It's now a top 100 name for first time in history and rising fast still. I know of about 5 baby girl and boy Rowan's born in last year or so. Also RoMan with an M is the top fastest rising boy name and is about to enter top 50 and still rising so could be top 30/20 in next year or so. Then there's Reuben too also top 50 and still rising - has risen hundreds of places in the charts. All just feel a bit trendy and same-y to me now. I much prefer Rowan for a girl but even then really dislike the likely shortening to"Row" and the rapid growth of all the similar names has taken the shine off it last couple of years

I really like the name Dylan!

My baby daughter is called Rowan so I obviously like that name. I live in the uk where it’s a unisex name (and the numbers of both girls and boys being named this is increasing pretty dramatically). It’s a top 100 girls name in Scotland (2018 data) though but doesn’t feature on the boys list there interestingly.
What I hadn’t anticipated with the name Rowan was that Roman (with an M) is the current fastest rising boys name and is suddenly everywhere. There’s 2 Roman’s at our local nursery so when I phone up about my daughter I usually have to say something like “I’m asking about Rowan ....with a W” as everyone gets confused. There’s a RoNan due to start soon too 😆I’ll pick a less trendy name next time that isn’t so similar to another v popular name 🤣

I will also warn you that even though I’ve asked them not to, my well meaning family always call my daughter “Row” by accident 🤦‍♀️ So obviously that’s going to happen at school. I don’t really like it as a nickname, feels very unfinished. But maybe you do like it.

Maybe see which name suits or let us know if you want alternative suggestions?

I agree with funwithfondue - perhaps because it is my middle name and I am used to people thinking it is a boy's name. Doesn't surprise me either way male or female.

I love Rowan. My (male) friend's name. He's very alpha male, successful, handsome, cool.... Definitely!

(I also think it's great for girls too - one of the most flexible unisex names around)

Love the name Rowan - it's on our middle name shortlist for our daughter, but I think it's a totally unisex name. I wouldn't bat at eyelid at being introduced to a male or female Rowan.

I prefer the spelling Roan for a boy. Think 'Rowan' is the 'unisex' spelling, whereas Roan is the more male spelling.

I only like Rowan for a girl. Reasonably common in scotland.

I love Rowan, it's my nephew's name and it's just perfect for a boy or girl I think.

Rowan - definitely a boys name for me too (Rowan Atkinson and all that!) Is a great name and I like 'Rohan' spelling too. Ethan is really popular around here so depends if you mind that? I know a Dylan and an Ewan.

Kellan - heard this one recently - I think it's cornish.

Owen - really nice - doesn't seem overly popular except maybe in Wales!

I think it is usually more seen as a male name and get any junkmail addressed to Mr Rowan X as a rule

I love Rowan. It was on our list but we ended up picking Louis Finn. I love Pierce for a boy obviously but dh didn't agree.

I know too little boys called Rowan - sounds more like a boys name than a girls to me. And it's lovely!

I love Rowan, for a boy or a girl, it is my DD's name, so I am biased . It's a beautiful, special name.

We had a middle name picked out and I was so convinced she was going to be a girl that we didn't have a boy's name chosen.

The midwife said "have you a name for this baby?" and we said "yes if it's a girl, if not, the book's in the bag!".

We did consider using Rowan if it was a boy, but the middle name we had chosen is a girl's name and we couldn't bring ourselves to change it - the two run together so perfectly.

Luckily she is a girl!
But I still say yes, have Rowan for a boy!
