I am not going to give my baby a surname

DP and I have decided not to give our new baby a traditional surname. We have issues with both our families and no desire to perpetuate their names with our offspring.

We have two inspirational friends who have passed away. They're names were Elizabeth and Anne. In honour of them our DD will have their names as her surname. So her full name will be Iris Poppy Elizabeth-Anne.

I know some people will think this is stupid but we think it is beautiful and meaningful.

Has anyone here done anything like this? What do people think?

Apart from anything else, long surnames are a PITA - trust me, I've had two!

Please at least shorten it for her. What about Anel?

Or, on a more serious note, Elizane?

sweetkitty · 11/10/2009 10:42

What different Witch says, all change your name and have a new surname

VineGruesomeTits · 11/10/2009 10:41

Sassy vinegartits

scroobiuspirate · 11/10/2009 10:40

see what i mean!!

VineGruesomeTits · 11/10/2009 10:39

Just change all your name to knobjockey, you can be the knobjockey family, the knobjockey's from knobend

colditz · 11/10/2009 10:37

Just do it if you think it's a good idea, just be very aware that on your daughter's 18th birthday she will promptly change her name to Smith.

differentWitch · 11/10/2009 10:36

what a dozy idea!

HEre is an alternative idea.

Both of you have issues with your own families. So why don't you decide on your own surname and change it by deed poll so you are no longer connected to the people you have issues with? Then when baby arrives, she bears your surname and not a flight of fancy that will haunt her all her days.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 11/10/2009 10:36

Why don't you live as Ms Stewpid Elizabeth-Anne for a month and see how it goes?

Elizanne is a better idea all round.

scroobiuspirate · 11/10/2009 10:36

i might call my next offspring ( if i have one)

Sassy Vinegartits, have always liked her posts. v inspirational.

scattykatty · 11/10/2009 10:35

Oh and all men are not bastards, and how do you know 'Elizabeth' and 'Anne' weren't names chosen by their Fathers?

Marioandluigi · 11/10/2009 10:34

Im sorry, if this is real its an absolutely awful idea.

If its not - 1/10

SanctimoniousTeeTotalPrig · 11/10/2009 10:34

Why not pick a surname that's to do with your job. That's what a lot of surnames are anyway, to show a tradition within the family. White being bakers and Smith, blacksmiths, silversmiths etc.

What do you do? Please work in the NHS. I think Enema would make a lovely surname.

Or a colour? Or a type of tree?

Commemorate your friends by raising your child to respect their memories and the ideals they stood for. Don't give your child a silly name that's a millstone round their neck and expect them to appreciate the profundity of it.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 11/10/2009 10:33

It's a dumb idea that will cause no end of problems.

Pick an inspirational family name for her and adopt it as your family name so you can throw off all your ties to all those b*stard men in your ancestry.

scattykatty · 11/10/2009 10:31

Hahaha serious ISSUES. The name is total insanity, people will think you're crazy with good reason.

Must be a wind up, noone would burden their child with such a 'stewpid' surname in RL.

Dizzyclarebear · 11/10/2009 10:30

Oh well, I'm sure it'll be character building and it'll give her an extra excuse to hate you when she's a stroppy teenager...

Lulumama · 11/10/2009 10:29

the friends were inspirational to you, not your child, so it's a bit OTT to give her their names as a surname.

give her their names as middle names, but not as a surname.

she will spend her whole life explaining it

or just make up a new surname.

but giving her four first names is a bit strange and so is referring to all men as bastards

SanctimoniousTeeTotalPrig · 11/10/2009 10:29

Iris Poppy Mulieres.

Iris Poppy Fanjolina.

Iris Poppy DownWithTheBastardMen?

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 11/10/2009 10:27

I should also add that your DD's father is a 'bastard man'. Maybe this is the generation that he can reclaim his family name and change it's connotation. Children will soak up who you are and what you feel.
you can decide what that is.

stewpid · 11/10/2009 10:26

Is it rally the hyphen that is bothering people. Would you all think it much better if she was Iris Elizabeth Anne? Or Iris Anne Elizabeth?

Or Iris Poppy Elizabethan?

Well honestly, I can see the whole feminist argument about male surnames and its not exactly a new idea so can't criticise your thinking on that one. Can't you see that using two hyphenated first names as a family name is a bit bonkers and extremely annoying to spell/ explain? Choose a decent female role model and use their surname to avoid the male hritage stuff, and use Elizabeth Anna as middle or first names. What about Curie? or Pankhurst or Davies? Earhart? (SP?) BTW still not sure if this isn't some weird joke...

scroobiuspirate · 11/10/2009 10:23

if elizabeth and anne had issues, i think you are just passing on issues.

a clean slate of a name would be more postive?

Ivykaty44 · 11/10/2009 10:23

I have three friends in RL

Mr Charlie
Mr Jeremy
Mr James

They dont have all these problems of "I want your surname"
I wouldn't hypernate the name

Annelizabeth

you should all change though

I lol'd in RL @ By all means choose a new surname, but as it stands your DD will spend the next 90-odd years saying "no, it's just Iris Poppy Elizabeth-Anne. No, that's it. Elizabeth-Anne IS my surname. Yes, really. Oh for fuck's sake, here's my driving licence."

If this is real, I fear it may not be your best laid plan.
