Scottish baby name??

jacks1972 · 06/10/2009 21:45

Our baby is due in January, not sure if it's a boy or girl and we are struggling to agree on any name...

we have a very scottish surname and DH will only consider a scottish firstname, I don't really see why but I'll go with it for now...

Also, some of the names I like DH thinks are 'Public school' types!! Can't win!

Some names I like [scottish and non-scottish] are:

Finlay
Isaac
Seth
Hamish - maybe
Fraser - not sure

Maisie
Grace
Isobel
Eve

Any other suggestions??
Please help!

Hi - this thread is a little old. If you’re looking for a Scottish baby name, find the most popular here. MNHQ

I suppose you could be even more scottish and go very Gaelic

Tormond (Norman)
Domnhall (Donald, pronounced Do-all)
Murdo

What about Iain?

or do the Hebridean thing and feminise a male name?

As a secondary school teacher in the hebrides I taught: Murdina, Donalda, Donaldina, Lewisina.

Older people included Calumina, Davina, Gormelia.

(I think I am joking on this last one, tbh!)

FimboFortunaFeet · 07/10/2009 10:20

Laurie/Lawrie?

FimboFortunaFeet · 07/10/2009 10:19

I know some Mhairi's who are pronunced Marry instead of Varee.

weegiemum · 07/10/2009 10:18

Brodie would be way up there if we ever had another dc (not going to happen, dh is snipped!)

I know a Lewis Brodie - cooooooool name!

Flora seems very "old lady" to me but I had an old lady named flora over the road when I was little.

The correct Gaelic spelling for Lachlann is 2 'n's'

Also forgot Marsali (pronounced marr-say-lee). It's the Gaelic form of Marjorie, and I know 2 - one a very grown up nurse, another in primary 1! The both have amazing long white-blonde curls, though I don't think tht is compulsory!

FimboFortunaFeet · 07/10/2009 10:18

Ailsa was on my list for dc2 who was a boy.

Campbell
Struan
Lindsay (not quite sure if this is Scottish though)

I do quite like Henry but somehow something like Henry McTavish just sounds wrong. Henry is too English.

Lorna

randomeuro · 07/10/2009 10:14

Reid, Fraser?

p.s ROFL @ dont agree names can be too scottish.unless you are called tattie bogle or mince McNeeps Scottishmummy

ILoveGregoryHouse · 07/10/2009 10:11

Oog, weegiemum, nice list. Love Brodie and might keep for next DC (assuming a DS4!).

How about Gregor?
Lachlan nice.

Also like Mairi, Iona, Skye, Ailsa, Catriona and Flora for girls and Rory for a boy.

skihorse · 07/10/2009 10:04

smac Unfortunately it's now the law that every female born MUST be named Grace or Eve. c.f., Jane/Louise for the 70s!

Pingpong · 07/10/2009 09:55

squeaver I think you are bonkers !
Why on earth would a Scottish surname not go with a Scottish surname?
Surely Cameron Mclean sounds much better than Pierre Mclean just as a totally random example!

From your original list jacks1972 I like Finlay and Fraser best and Isobel is ok. I don't consider the girls names very Scottish though.

ShutUpandDrinkYourGin · 07/10/2009 09:45

Ross and Elspeth are nice - Shona is lovely too

skihorse · 07/10/2009 09:39

I've got a Scots sounding first name, a Scots gaelic middle-name (one of the above which I never expected to see in a billion years! ), a gaelic surname, a Scottish birth certificate, a Scottish bf and an English accent.

If I had NO connection with Scotland whatsoever it would naff beyond the pale - but my saving grace is that I was actually born there and lived there for a few years. But people are always asking about my names and it can be a pita.

MyCatsAScarierBastardThanYours · 07/10/2009 09:38

Tambajam · 07/10/2009 09:14

Instead of Catherine what about Kathleen or Kitty as a nickname?

I like Hamish.

MmeGoblindt · 07/10/2009 09:10

We have a Connor (but I know that is quite popular in Scotland at the moment) and Catriona, pronounced Cat-ri-o-na not Ka-tree-na

Why would a Scottish forename not go with a Scottish surname?

curlyredhead · 07/10/2009 09:07

Even if the OP is Scottish, squeaver?

squeaver · 06/10/2009 22:45

I would just like to say, however, that an overtly Scottish first name with an overtly Scottish surname is - imo - naff of the first order of naffness.

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 22:17

on girls side also Morna (dd1's middle name, means "beloved" - sometimes wish we had used it as her first name but Katherine is also nice!!!)

weegiemum · 06/10/2009 22:16

Struan
Brodie
Lewis
Logan
Innes
Rory
Lorn

Catriona/Catherine/Katherine/Katharine
Isla
Iona
Rhona/Rona
Isabel
Margaret
Irene
Mairi/Mhairi
Skye
Jessica/Jessie

are some of the names that spring to mind .....

jacks1972 · 06/10/2009 22:13

I like Flora too... DH reaction was "I can't believe it's not butter!"

Alistair is a good name, it is my uncle's name but that is not putting me off.

Jock is also a good choice

OP posts:
jacks1972 · 06/10/2009 22:10

Angus is a good name but [there's always a but] my previous boss was called Angus and there was no love lost there, my next boss was Euan which is also a good name - it's just the association that is putting me off!

OP posts:
MrsKitty · 06/10/2009 22:10

Alistair (DS's middle name)
Lachlan
Finlay
Campbell

Isobel / Isabel
Heather
Una

squeaver · 06/10/2009 22:09

Ruaraidh or Rory
Hamish
Jock

Fiona
Iona
Flora
How about Catriona instead of Catherine? (not that unusual in Scotland)

jacks1972 · 06/10/2009 22:09

Lola0109, Lachlan is growing on me but we live and work quite near a few of Edinburgh's posh schools, DH cannot seem to say 'Lachlan', 'Finlay' without putting on a posh Edinburgh Accent and waving his hands about - he even throws in a 'Crawford' and 'Farquhar'!!
I think they are good old scottish names but not they way he says them!!
