Something along the lines of:

I have a Darren and a Karen. Would it be too much to call DC3 Sharon?

Maggiebehave - yes Trac(e)y is late 50s onwards - from the film 'High Society'. Plus (I think) it's the name of Diana Rigg's Bond girl character in that one film with er, you know, the Bond who was sacked. It's basically the 'Amelie' of the sixties - saw the movie/thought the name was classy/oops so did everybody else...

juneybean · 09/10/2009 23:45

People I know born in the 70's:

Jane
Jaime
Victoria/Vicky
David
Kirsty
Gabriel
Naomi
Keith
Gail

I went to a pretentious secondary school and remember the music teacher asking a girl whether she pronounced her name 'Share-on' or 'Shah-ron'. Er, no.

There were a few 'Kah-rens' though.

simplesusan · 09/10/2009 23:08

Remember a certain teacher always calling one girl CHeryl (with a Ch as in church) and not SHeryl as in sh.
Dean seemed a cool name to me as a child!!!!
So too did Claire.

I thought my name was pretty timeless...

However, it has been mentioned on this thread more than once.

I have obviously been walking around in a complete delusion.

Anyway - there was a boy called George who lived in our street in the eighties and oh how we laughed and laughed!

pranma · 09/10/2009 21:59

didnt Jason begin its ascent around then?

nighbynight · 08/10/2009 21:22

It would definitely have been "Shall I call my son Steve, Dave, Andy, Ian or Graham/Graeme?"

ancientgeordiegirl · 08/10/2009 21:03

having just been to a 20 year school reunion am laughing at this as we were all 1970/1971 babies and had loads of Sarahs, Julies, Karens, Kays, Helens, Nicolas, Claire/Clares, Victorias, Louises, Alisons, Jackies, Leigh, Rachels, - you get the idea! My own name has been mentioned by lots of people and my middle name is Jane so I feel like I'm amongst kindred spirits!

stressheaderic · 08/10/2009 20:58

I am a Nicola Jane, (every Nicola I know is Nicola Jane) but I still actually quite like my name...
The most common names back then in the mid 80s were Emma, Sarah, Claire and Joanne. We had a friend called Cheryl - I remember all the mums thinking that was terribly high-brow

nymphadora · 08/10/2009 19:41

I was born in 1978 and there only seemed to be 2 names for boys Steven and Paul.

Fleecy · 08/10/2009 14:07

My first and middle names are both top five now - but were rather more unusual when I was born in 1977. I was jealous of my sister's middle name - Jane.

I hated my name for years. Now it's gone to the other extreme but I do like it!

DH is Darren though so we don't let the side down entirely.

Salonly · 07/10/2009 22:58

Has no-one said Andrew/Andy and David/Dave?

DungeonButter · 07/10/2009 22:03

Thanks choosyfloosy.

lolianja · 07/10/2009 21:50

I was born in 1988 and am nodding and grinning my way through this thread and the ensuing nostalgia!

My 17-year-old sister is in a class where virtually everybody's middle name is Jane, Anne, Claire or Louise (my forename!).

What always amuses me about the 60s/70s names threads is the fact that 75% of the names mentioned were still in the Top 50 or so in the early 90s. I know of heaps of Kellys, Helens, Gareths, Marks etc in their late teens... then in kids born post about 92/93 they all tail off suddenly.

I guess it's just one of those zeitgeisty, 'edge of generation' things where trends seem to go on perpetually and then disappear as suddenly as they arrived over the space of about a year or two.

coolma · 07/10/2009 17:11

Hulababy · 07/10/2009 17:06

Most popular name in my school seemed to be Claire - I was always one of 3 or 4 in the class. Most had the same middle name, Louise, too.

choosyfloosy · 07/10/2009 16:55

'I have a dd Sarah Louise, my neighbour has a Sarah Jane and my neighbour on the other side has a Sarah Elizabeth. A new neighbour opposite, who seemed lovely at first and makes fantastic vol au vents, has just had a dd and called her Sarah Louise Jane Elizabeth. Are we being unreasonable to think she is taking the piss?'

LOL dungeonbutter

edam · 07/10/2009 16:53

I'd like something unusual for this baby and have a feeling it might be a dd... am thinking Rebecca or Abigail, but are they are too wacky?

(Several of both in my school plus all the others already mentioned.)

Katz · 07/10/2009 16:46

If i call my daughter Katy or Kate will people always lengthen it to Kathryn?

based on my 1st form register in 1989 which went Kate, Kathryn, Katy, Katherine, Catelyn! also in the same year group were 2 other Catherine's and 1 other Caitlin.

NancyBotwin · 07/10/2009 16:39

I'm Irish too and a lot of the names already mentioned would have been rarer there - most of my classmates were Mary, Ann, Theresa, Catherine or Deirdre or variations of... Jackie & Caroline were still popular due to the Kennedys...

Only knew one Sharon in the whole school and it was considered unusual!

The names considered most unusual in my year were Kirsten & Natalie.

MrsJohnDeere · 07/10/2009 16:38

Most popular names at my primary school were
Nicola
Debra
Sharon
Tracey
Amanda
Samantha
Joanne

Boys:
Gary
Darren
Peter
Lee
Ke vin

In a very rough area of Manchester though.

tearinghairout · 07/10/2009 16:33

Lynne
Barry
Pete
Kevin
Julie
Lorraine
Karen
Imogen
Angela
Lesley
Elaine
Helen
Hillary
Martin
Sarah
Josephine
We also had an Ashleigh, which was unheard of!

jeanjeannie · 07/10/2009 16:25

I'm 44 and the class was full of Sharons and Tracey. Also popular were Linda (they were always the cool ones) Elaine, Claire, Lesley, Joanne, Gary (cool back then) Michael, David and Stephen.

Names considered posh in our comp were Heather, Catherine, Emily, Aiden, Christopher and Miles.

MaggieBehave · 07/10/2009 13:29

Bathsheba, we didn't have many traceys or sharons either. I think that was late 60s.

So Traceys and Sharons would usually be about 43ish or older. Does that sound about right??
