Agree about names in different languages - My dh mentioned Casper to his Spanish father who told us it was Spanisgh for dandruff (spelt Kaspa)!

minervaitalica · 08/10/2009 16:43

Ginevra is the Italian translation of Guinevere (Lancelot etc) actually - so it comes across as rather regal .

It is a nightmare to find a name that works in 2 languages - some nice names are positively rude in another, or unpronounceable..

MaggieBehave · 08/10/2009 09:26

It must be hard to find a name which works in several countries but isn't too popular or weird in any of them either, that you both like, that goes with sur name, that none of your friends or family have used...?

omg.

lilysam · 08/10/2009 07:05

Would love to Maggie but I'm pregnant

These lists are great, cos when my family predictably screw their faces at my name choices i'll say ....."well its top in belgium, denmark, switzerland, high in canada, usa blah blah blah so no not a strange/unusual name at all"

Thats if i tell them any names at all of course....

MaggieBehave · 07/10/2009 20:03

Ginevra?!!? y tonico??? con hielo y limon?

Thissideofchannel · 07/10/2009 19:45

Ooh, thats a great list too - thanks lilysam.

lilysam · 07/10/2009 12:09

The variation in spellings is partly because of the effect of Quebec

In my children's age group the trend seems to be to name your children after old fashioned professions - Tanner, Cooper etc, or any variation along the lines of Braydon/Caden/Brennon/Brandon. Cubs etc can get quite confusing!

mathanxiety · 07/10/2009 04:38

The Jayden plague is spreading . Love Bram though.

NorktasticNinja · 06/10/2009 21:51

Yay-den I think. Never met one or heard it TBH.

Note rhyming of the girls names 4-8. lol.

Thissideofchannel · 06/10/2009 21:41

Surprised about Jayden - is this pronounced Jay-den or Yay-den?

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 06/10/2009 21:25

Hello thisside!

whensmydayoff · 06/10/2009 19:37

Lucia, Hmm think I like that. With it being Italian (and me being thick) do they pronounce it Loo-see-a or Loo-chee-a?

joesgirl · 06/10/2009 16:59

True, my friend said there were about 4 or 5 sofias in the nursery.

Eugenia is indeed not very common, but then this is not a representative sample.

And here are the other ones I forgot to add earlier:

Beatrice
Laura
Elisabetta

Giovanni
Federico
Francesco
Leonardo
Ludovico

minervaitalica · 06/10/2009 15:19

I would add Sofia, Giulia, Leonardo, Edoardo, Paolo.

Eugenia???? Really?

MmeGoblindt · 06/10/2009 14:53

The German one is pretty accurate. I am soooo bored of the Luca/Max/Alex/Tim and Anna/Sophie/Marie/Lena trend in Germany at the moment.

Lots of the girls have a combination of the most popular names, so Anna-Maria, Marie-Sophie, Anna-Lena, Leonie-Sophie, Ann-Sophie...

joesgirl · 06/10/2009 14:44

sorry, meant Caterina

joesgirl · 06/10/2009 14:43

In case you are interested in actual names given by our Italian friends in Italy:

Ginevra
Ludovica
Carlotta
Cateria
Annamaria
Adele
Alice
Carola
Martha
Eugenia
Ir ene

Achille
Camillo
Vittorio
Gabriele
Lorenzo

minervaitalica · 06/10/2009 13:27

Luca is incredibly common and I cannot believe it's not on that list.

As of the Italian girl names, Giuseppina is probably the equivalent of Enid...
