Short go-anywhere boys' names. Adam? Simon?

we have tight criteria and are low on ideas.

Must be one or two syllables, not too easy to shorten and not an abbreviation of a longer classic (so not Tom, Ben, Joe).

Erring slightly on the side of poncey rather than ch modern or unique.

So far ideas include
Adam
Simon
John (tentative as is an uncle)
Alex (tentative due to Alex / Alexander rows)

wish we could use James but is already bagged.

middle name will be Henry, surname is one long syllable (think Stone or Rowe).

bring it on, oh wise MNers...

I wanted Seth for boy's name but DP point blank refused So we have a Sebastian instead second choice was Edward.

So:
Brendan??
Seth
Andrew (although obv can be shortened)

Ilike glenn
Peter's good too but carries echoes of family guy
Simon's nice as well
(fat lot of good I am)

kitpuss · 29/09/2009 18:06

Seth - we have a Seth and I LOVE the name. It's short and sweet.

Takver · 29/09/2009 17:33

Finn (but I know loads)
Kett
Toby (tho I suppose in principle short for Tobias)
Rufus

Friend's french husband said (re a mutual friend's baby) that Leon to him said drunken docker from Marseilles . . . so I suppose if you're planning a French choral scholarship

VulgarAchesButCanRun5k · 29/09/2009 17:01

Choristers that i know are called

Patrick
Charlie
Jordan
Benjamin

Undercovamutha · 29/09/2009 16:58

Evan, Ellis, Adam, Rhys and Lewis were all on our shortlist for DS (and we live in Wales too!).
Also love Matthew - but it can obviously be shortened!

campion · 29/09/2009 16:28

Am wondering what are chorister names

Homebird8 · 29/09/2009 16:26

Owen

CheerfulYank · 29/09/2009 16:25

All the names I love are out as are nn: Sam (which is DS), Jake, Charlie, Max, Will...

Hmm...Hugo? I love it but Dh says absolutely not.

Jack? Elliot?

ElectricElephant · 29/09/2009 16:24

What about Leon?

MrsBadger · 29/09/2009 16:20

re chorister/brickie, we want him to have the choice!

DH's procilivities mean that a Charles would be Charlie fro Day 1, chorister or not

actuall DH loves Oliver, which I think is hilarious for a man who said that Eleanor was 'too frilly'

dancey · 29/09/2009 16:19

Oscar
George

LimburgseVlaai · 29/09/2009 16:17

Brett

Not Rhys, sorry if this offends MNers with a ds of this name but that's a chav name, and OP clearly wants something more classy ("floppy haired" was mentioned).

Arthur? Frank?

doubleexpresso · 29/09/2009 16:15

Eric ? Seth ? Paul ? Arthur ? Toby ?

Avendesora · 29/09/2009 16:14

Peter

titchy · 29/09/2009 16:11

Oliver if chorister, Olly if brickie.
Harry work for either.
Charles if chorister, Charlie if brickie.

Anyway - what do you want him to be - chorister or brickie, and decide from that!

hollyhobbie · 29/09/2009 16:08

Finn?

jemart · 29/09/2009 15:47

Inspirachion · 29/09/2009 15:36

Brett

NormaSknockers · 29/09/2009 15:36

Rupert
Stefan
George
James
Kieran
Edward
Lloyd
Luca
Lewis
Olly
Reuben

rosieposey · 29/09/2009 15:23

Milo? He was a fab character in the book 'Catch 22' but im probablybiased because it really suits my DS

CantSleepWontSleep · 29/09/2009 15:11

Duncan. We have one with the same sort of surname.

MrsBadger · 29/09/2009 15:09

yes re brickies, but 'Andy, Kev and Mark' sounds acceptable, whereas 'Andy, Kev and Miles' sounds odd

ditto choristers - 'Sebastian, Christopher and Mark' vs 'Sebastian, Christopher and Grant'

Now actually I could live with Colin if it weren;t for the ghastly wet drip from the Secret Garden

Lancelottie · 29/09/2009 14:59

PS I do like some of those names. Won't specify which.

Lancelottie · 29/09/2009 14:58

Just reminded me at the time of my DH's errr, restricted attitude to acceptable names. And I wanted the one you picked in the end and didn't get it. Sulk.

All brickies are called Andy or Kevin anyhow. IME.

How about you bludgeon DH over the head with some of these reserve suggestions:

Gordon
Graham
Colin
Roger
Patrick
Cuthbert
Francis

then slip in your preferred name while he's still reeling backwards crying 'Aargh, no, no?'
