After reading the other thread I thought it might be interesting to see and list the different names we all think are pretentious.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Octavius

Thyme (a boy)

Ottaline

These are all in one class I go to. They look nice on paper, but sound so odd when spoken to a toddler.

lol at Gulliver. Sorry..

Sakura · 04/10/2009 12:07

i heard a name recently that suprised me. THe old man (whose name it was) was lovely and gentle. A real gentleman. So I dont think it actually was pretentious in his case because I think it was probably fitting for his background. But Ill mention it because it suprised me and is rare: Eggerton.

PamsGotGreatShoes · 04/10/2009 12:01

One of my school friends named their child (get ready for this)

Amaylayah

To be pronouced Amelia, to be pronounced like you've had far too much champpers and can't get your mouth round it!

merryberry · 03/10/2009 21:44

Gulliver

pranma · 03/10/2009 20:53

I do have a distant relative named Farquhart!!!His family is Scottish but you can imagine what it was like for him here.

twirlymum · 03/10/2009 09:43

I was al college with a guy called Wesley. His surname was Hiscock. Everyone called him Wes....

Tamlin · 03/10/2009 09:27

My DS's name has shown up a few times on here, and I'll admit to feeling more amused than offended. (Mental note: name next one Tarquin to match.) Are there really so many sensitive mummies out there who are hideously wounded by other people's opinions of their naming choices?

Doobydoo · 01/10/2009 21:15

Eek I like most of these names and considered a few for ds's...also my cousin is called Jolyon and is utterly fab...so there

dizzydixies · 01/10/2009 21:10

thanks DB - you've just given me another reason to be glad I didn't use it !!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 01/10/2009 21:08

not pretentious at all dd, sounds like her off eastenders.

dizzydixies · 01/10/2009 20:48

I wanted to use Ever as a name for one of our DDs but was talked out of it for being too pretentious

I was referring more to the spelling than the name, lockets.

cleaningsucks · 01/10/2009 20:29

honeydew, I believe you completely - just hadn't heard of it before!

There is a prof I know who is called Vyvyan, spelt like that too. Poor man - bet it's been a trial to him over the years.

honeydew · 30/09/2009 23:15

honestly, it WAS Crispian! I had e-mailed the Open University and my reply was from a Crispian. I really noticed it and thought how unusual!

nevergoogledragonbutter · 30/09/2009 22:39
