Only 3 weeks to go and still undecided. I really liked India but my sister in law told me that India together with our surname sounded like an Indian restaurant! Its put me off it!

It's better than Ireland, but I still wouldn't use it, for all of the reasons already posted. I love all the other names on your list, though. I know a Tatiana who is called Tate, and a Russian one who is Tania.

Rindercella · 23/12/2009 14:34

LastOfTheMulledWine, I have to agree with you. DD is an absolute stunner (I may be biased, but it's true) and is called India. She has an abundance of dark curls and beautiful big dark eyes.

India is a beautiful name.

shonaspurtle · 23/12/2009 14:33

In the Scottish Names 2009 list there was a girl named Indieya. Don't do that.

Now someone's going to tell me that this is the correct Uzbek spelling of the name Jane.

FoxyRevenger · 23/12/2009 14:30

I dunno, I think it's seen as quite pretentious now, used by people who wish they had a deep spiritual connection with the country but were too busy at Oxford to actually visit it. Sorry.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 23/12/2009 14:28

I know two. Lovely MNer's little girl, but she gets called something else entirely.

And the most beautiful woman in the world. Long, swishy strawberry blonde hair, porcelain skin, big expressive eyes and an amazing figure.

Indias, ime, are bloody beautiful.

Twinkleandpearls · 23/12/2009 14:27

I like it but I am an utter ponce. It depends on what your surname is as well. My dd would sound stupid being called India with her frightfully common Irish surname.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 23/12/2009 14:25

India is not a child's name IMO. I think it's pretentious.

MadBadandCoveredinTinsel · 23/12/2009 14:19

Round here, the name India signifies "my parents work in the meeja"

MamaLazarou · 23/12/2009 14:14

People called India live in Primrose Hill, go on gap years and borrow daddy's Porsche.

It's a nice name, though. Just frightfully posh.

RainRainGoAway · 23/12/2009 12:45

Its a bit... IMO.

I know a few Indias and they are always from the 'burbs. In fact, the less they are connected to the actual country India, the more likely they have been called it! If you have a deep, spiritual connection with a place then great. But if you are from Weston-super-Mare and given this name and your parents have been no closer to India than Kent, then its a bit yick.

flimflammum · 23/12/2009 12:36

India Arie (singer) is cool, though.

flimflammum · 23/12/2009 12:36

I kind of like it but it does sound hippyish. I met someone recently whose daughter is called Asia - which wouldn't be so bad, except that she lives in Asia! It'd be like someone living in London calling their daughter Europe. I think she's a bit loopy.

beeny · 23/12/2009 12:30

I am from India and if i still lived there would not call my daughter England.I have friends and their daughter is called India i thinks it sounds stupid.

OrangeAnge · 23/12/2009 12:26

My DP loves the name India but seeing as I am blonde and we are both very pale skinned I just don't see that it would work. I imagine a dark haired girl when I hear the name. It is very pretty though.

And I like Indie but that just makes me think of Indiana Jones!

Lucycb70 · 23/12/2009 11:41

I love the name India as I love the country and its people. It makes me happy whenever I say it, hence our daughter being named 'India Rose'.

dogonpoints · 25/09/2009 22:20

agree with woolfie. A difficult name to carry off. And I know one India who could hardly suit her name less. It's almost funny.

mmrsceptic · 25/09/2009 22:14

lol

that's very funny

wheresclaire · 25/09/2009 21:28

I know a little girl called Peru. I love that too, but i always call her India by mistake!

MrsSaxon · 25/09/2009 21:07

It makes me think of india wilkes, from gone with the wind.

I think its a lovely soft name, with a lot of character.

alittlebitshy · 25/09/2009 18:44

i knew a tatiana known as tats. better?

I quite like India. though in my mind it is linked in with baby India in Neghbours atm .

mmrsceptic · 25/09/2009 18:32

It's become a bit Courteney tbh.

Firawla · 25/09/2009 18:30

India is really pretty. I think its not too popular but not too weird

diddl · 25/09/2009 16:19

I like India Gabriella

India Louisa?

endoxana · 25/09/2009 12:11

Tatiana is probably my favourite too but we are Scottish and tatty just means potato so fear she would have a tough time!

OP posts:
Cortina · 25/09/2009 12:05

I love Tatiana - know an uber posh little one known as 'Tatty'. We are not uber posh and H would never agree I fear
