DH and I both really love the name Verity for a girl. DH is concerned that it would get shortened to Vez though when she reached school age. I think Vez sounds terrible. Do you think people/kids would shorten it? (I'm Australian where everything is shortened or renamed!!!)

I'm a Verity and love my name. I was nearly called Maria but my mum luckily changed her mind at the last minute (I'm not being rude about Maria as it is a pretty name but just not 'me').

I've never had a nickname as such but a friends brother couldn't pronounce 'V's so I got called Ferrety/Ferret which I hated at junior school.

Only one other person has shortened my name and that was too Vee-Vee. They got shot down in flames and never did it again.

Being a Verity has actually been in my favour a fair few times particularly when I worked in a credit control dept. Customers seemed incapable of continuing to hurl abuse at me over unpaid bills once they found out my name .

I know a teenage Verity. Her name doesn't get shortened, but her friends never pronounce the "t" Veriee

I've got a Verity and we've not thought to shorten it. I'm sure when she starts school though her friends will manage too!

I taught one - she was normally Verity, but occ shortened to Vee.

It's a lovely name.

Oh it's good to hear so many people like it.

Now I just have to (a) have a girl and (b) get DH to like it. He has form with this, he didn't like the name I suggested for our dd initally and then he came around.

I adore the name Verity - and think if bump had been a girl, then i may have chosen it.

I'm thinking it's going to become quite popular - seems to be one of those names that gets mentioned quite a lot.

I'm not right fond, tbh, cos it sounds like Ferretty. It means truth but sounds sneaky.

I've only ever known one Verity and she was a little tell-tale, so that's probably clouding my judgement. So, erm, good luck anyway, I'm sure it's a lovely name really.

One of my friends from school is Verity and it wasn't shortened that much although she was sometimes called Veri. Never heard her called Vez or Vezza.

DH and I were saying last night that we loved it as a name but wouldn't use it because of my friend (not because she's not lovely, just might be a bit weird!).

My sister is Verity and 95% of the time just gets called Verity. I tend to call her 'V' and I'm sure she got Vez or Vezza at some 'chavvy' teenager stage at secondary school - but it never stuck and it was only the odd time. I wouldn't worry about it to be honest!!

I LOVE the name and if I have a girl will be using it as the middle name...

I had a much harder time trying to avoid being called Vicky...

My dd's friend Verity is known as Vee.

She is also a two faced scheming little snake who wouldn't know the truth if it hit her on the nose - so she is most inappropriately named!

It's still a lovely name, though - don't let that put you off!

Verity is a lovely name. I teach secondary age and have known three Veritys in my time at the school. None, that I've known of, have been shortened to anything. In my experience kids are pretty good at letting it be known that they like/dislike a certain nickname and everyone else cottons on eventually!

Thanks all for the feedback, I'm going to keep plumping for it, am sure DH will come around eventually. who knows, it could be a boy.....

I have a friend called Verity. Fabulous name. Don't like the shortened versions, though - would it help to bring your DD up to be quite feisty so she can take on all who try to abbreviate it? Get her kickboxing before she can walk - it will stimulate her leg muscles no end.

I have a friend called Verity and we ALL call her "Vel".

P.S. Your surname doesn't begin with "D", does it? Just checking. Not nice initials!

Lovely name. My DH isn't keen because he says it'll get shortened to 'V', which has happened with two that we know, both adults. Nice name though.

I always loved the name Verity, although I think being a David Essex fan the song about his daughter had something to do with it.

It's lovely. They will shorten anything-or if it is too short they will lengthen it! I gave my DS a short name to avoid it and he is called by his surname! You can't win-don't even bother trying.

It wouldn't occur to me that Vez could be a shortened version. I suppose you could do that to any name if you think about it.

Know a 5 year old Verity. She has never had it shortened, ever!
