Hubby convinced this is what we should call 2nd baby if a girl. But not sure if I like it or not... Meets criteria of being

  • multi-syllabic (last name a v common single)
  • not in the top whatever
  • not too modern
  • doesn't clash with 1st daughter name Verity in rhyme or theme
  • don't know anyone else with it

Is it clunky, unpretty (wouldn't go as far as ugly), 80's, interesting?? Really unsure about it but so struggling to agree something and could pass it just so we can stop talking about it.... Thoughts appreciated, can be brutal....

I think it's a lovely name, but it sounds like you're not too keen so maybe you should keep looking!

InmaculadaConcepcion · 17/01/2010 18:51

I went to school in Cornwall (ahem, rather a long time ago) and it was a popular name there. Knew a few Tamsins - one was nn'ed Tash, which I thought was an all right alternative to Tammy...

foresttarotadmin · 17/01/2010 10:06

I went to school with a lassie that changed her name from Lucy to Tamsin. She was very beautiful and intelligent. I think its a lovely name.

flashtwinkle · 17/01/2010 09:28

my daughter is a tamsin and will not be call anything else. poeple have tried callingher tam but she goes mad, she is only 8 and poeple listen to her as she puts them in thier place we called her this for two reasons firstly i thought iwas expecting a boy and loved the name thomas and this is the femine version, and secondly at the time we liked tammy for short but now we wont call her anything else. i think tamsin is a really pretty strong name. love it cat think of many girls name we like for another one it is often discussed

schmizaj · 01/10/2009 19:42

Coolio looks like loads more +ve than -ve, I could be convinced... Already know a Tabitha so that's kinda gone, I like the Meredith - think of it as being quite american (irrelevant). I'm also throwing Theadora into the ring!!

My neice is Tamsin, I think it is pretty, she gets shortened to Tamsy.

Anya4 · 26/09/2009 19:49

I knew a Tamsyn at school and she was just known as that, rather than Tammy or Tampon.
Know a baby Tamryn which is also a little different.
I like it. Also like Tabitha - elegant name but not too popular..

Cortina · 26/09/2009 05:36

Just to add know of a Tamlyn - what do you think of that?

I think she said it was of Welsh origin or something, I forgot.

nooka · 26/09/2009 04:18

I think it's fine. I knew a couple of Tamsins as school, who were always called Tamsin (never Tammy ot Tam or anything unpleasant). Goes well with Verity too. But if you're not amazingly keen then I think you should keep on lokking.

Tamlin · 25/09/2009 21:35

I think Verity and Tamsin/Tamsyn have a very similar feel (both more popular in the sixteenth century than nowadays!) Know two adult Tamsyns, neither of whom ever got called Tammy or Tampon.

Tamsin seems to be the more common English version thanks to Hardy, Tamsyn the Cornish.

Cortina · 25/09/2009 14:03

Others to consider which might meet criteria:

Marnie (Hitchcock reference).
Leonora
Annabel

BlueChampagne · 25/09/2009 13:43

I like it but knew a very classy Tamsin at school (70s/80s). But if you're not sure, you'll have to keep looking/thinking. Do any of the following comply with your criteria?

Meredith
Rosanne/a
Meryl
Corinna
Marissa / Melissa

Jenbot · 25/09/2009 13:36

I knew a Tamsin, she was never called Tammy or Tampon or Tampax. Sometimes Tasmin.
I think it goes nicely with Verity.

Cortina · 25/09/2009 13:07

Found out recently that my relatives (100s of years ago) called 'Thomasin', 'Thomasine' or 'Thomazin' would have been known as 'Tamsin' that's how it was pronounced!

I'd be tempted by 'Thomasine' (Tamsin) for that very reason . Although she'd probably spend her life correcting people.

Prefer Thomasina to Tamsin that said.

oldspeckledtam · 25/09/2009 09:57

I'm a Tamsin. I have never had been called tampax or tampon. Never even considered that would happen!

It is a name growing in popularity. I was the only one at school (primary, secondary 6th form and uni) but there are two in my daughter's nursery and I've got 4 coming through the school where I teach.

I have never been a Tammy. People only ever call me Tammy once.

You will spend a lifetime stressing that it's TamSin rather than TasMin. That, and the lack of a good nickname are it's only flaws in my eyes. (I did try to go by 'Sin' at school once, but it didn't catch on...)

diddl · 24/09/2009 18:44

I like it.
Also like Tasmin.

qumquat · 24/09/2009 18:26

I love Tamsin. (also Jasmine). I had a school friend called Tamsin and it never occured to any of us to call her Tammy or anything related to tampons. Tamara is beautiful too.

Persephoponce · 24/09/2009 16:40

Tammy is awful, but I know a beautiful, stylish, upper class girl called Tamsyn (with the 'y') so I have those associations with the name.

funwithfondue · 24/09/2009 16:39

Love it!

Tammy or Tamsyn/Tamsin.

Unusual, (not many girl's names start with a 'T'), strong and feminine at the same time.

As has been said a million times before, kids will make stupid nicknames out of any name, whether it be plain, current, unusual or foreign - it all depends on the personality of your child! And if they do, it's only during the school years - you carry a name for your whole life (speaking as someone with a very unusual name who experienced this!)

miche8 · 24/09/2009 08:47

i went to school with a girl called tamsin, she too got called tammy tampon.

pranma · 23/09/2009 21:01

I think it is a truly gorgeous name

hullygully · 23/09/2009 16:33

Snice.

Tam75 · 23/09/2009 16:30

Ok, maybe I'm biased, but I think it's a great name! No-one's ever told me that they didn't like it (well not to my face anyway!), most people say they love it.

I've always liked being a Tamsin (never a Tammy, well apart from when I was 5 and had a 'Tammy Girl' t-shirt for a short while) & as for the tampax/tampon angle, a couple of boys tried to call me that when I was a teenager, but I just ignored them!

Def thumbs up from me

schmizaj · 14/09/2009 18:14

Well I just can't come up with anything better. I like quite far out names, hubby likes top 10 so can never agree but this could be a middle ground. Just doesn't sound as pretty as our DD1 name which is my initial reaction, but like strong names too so could be brought around...

Hmm didn't forsee the tampon angle though... Think Tamsin could be a lovely girl but would have to have a thick skin...

Will probably be a boy after thinking so hard on it anyways!!!

I think it's strange to give a child a name that you're wondering if she or you could live with. Choose a name you like!

(I like it well enough by the way, but that's not the point )
