Boys's names - running out of time now!

Dh and I still can't decide and are arguing discussing this on an almost daily basis!

So what do you think of these:

Oliver - dh loves, I think is too common popular
Nathanial - dh loves, I don't!
Ralph - I love, dh doesn't and keeps making jokes about gay landowners (think Harry Enfield!)
Jonathan - so so
Edward - dh not keen

New one that I love:

Keir

Any opinions? Our DS1 has a very popular name that was dh's choice. I have a very popular name too and was hoping to give our DC something a little more original so they're not always one of many wherever they go!

Oh, and dislike alliteration, so can't have any names beginning with A or D!

TIA

Keir is my son's name. Had loads of positive feedback. People do misspell as Kier a lot though like the construction firm. It's unusual but not far out in any way. We love it!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 10/09/2009 19:05

Lol at the socialist names - they're all awful I'm afraid!

mathan, Daniel is my favourite boys' name of all time but is hopeless with our surname .

PMSL at Sparrow .

Daniel? Keir is so nice though.

Loujalou · 10/09/2009 15:13

Sorry missed the bit where you said hubby was called Matthew. A friend of my DH was going to call son Matthew even though that was the father's name. Luckily they had a girl!

Loujalou · 10/09/2009 15:10

Adam
George
Matthew
Luke

Do really like Nathan / Nate

Oliver is v popular

Ralph and Edward is a no from me.

AliPalli · 10/09/2009 14:22

Oliver - agree too popular. Friend who has called her DS this keeps saying in the same breath as mentioning his name that it is too popular

Nathaniel - used to love this, but went off it when PG. Realised there are lots of Nathans around and they tend to be a bit thugish pro footballers.

Ralph - not keen, sorry. The Judy Blume thing and it also makes me think of vomiting.

Jonathan - I like, but is my DH's second name and he thinks it is dull and would not let me use it for DS. If you want more unusual than your DS1's name though, not the one to go for.

Edward - so so. Still not radical enough for you I feel.

Keir - I have known a father and son both called this. They were my GP's next door neighbours many year's ago. Their DS2 was a Blake.

I have just googled British Socialists for you what about:
Ramsey (McDonald)
Clement (Atlee)
Harold (Wilson)
Roy (Jenkins) (Hattersley)
Anthony/Tony (Benn/Blair)
Ken (Livingstone)
Arthur (Scargill)

In retrospect those don't look so useful.

I like Robert.

vivaGlasvegas · 09/09/2009 21:15

was intrigued, so tracked you down to here!

Keir is good, I've come across only one I think, and in my line of work we come across a lot of names!

I like Edmund, and Edward, both go well with your other names in the family.

I have the same Judy Blume problem with Ralph.

What about Nicholas/Nick as suggested above? that would sound good I think.

twirlymum · 08/09/2009 18:05

Ninjacat - that was the first thing that crossed my mind!!!!

TwoPersephone · 08/09/2009 17:50

I suggest Edward Nathanial then you both get a name you like

electra · 08/09/2009 10:20

neverthoughtidask - I had a girl so it didn't arise! Hope you can find something your dh agrees on...

sockmonster · 08/09/2009 08:40

out of your original suggestions:

Oliver - My DD had liver transplants so I am totally biased against this name!!!
Nathanial - Lovely. Hate Nathan though, like Nathanial and Nate
Ralph - Isn't there a dumb kid on the simpsons called Ralph? Not a favourite of mine
Jonathan - Classic, underused
Edward - Classic but a bit blah, I hate all short forms other than Teddy or Ned

Keir- First time I have heard this name ! I wouldn't know how to spell it

Nathaniel, Jonathan are best imho but if you love Keir then I think it should be Keir, or have Keir as a middle name?

Other names I like are Nicholas, Thomas, Fraser

neverthoughtidask · 08/09/2009 08:21

Lol, well this goes to show how much names divide opinions!

I'm still liking Keir, although slightly concerned that a couple of you have spelt it Kier - does this mean poor DS is going to spend his life spelling his name like I do .

Edmund - Blackadder?
Christian - I'm an atheist!
Joseph - lovely, but would be shortened to Joe and again doesn't go with our surname
Matthew - dh's name!
Dexter - serial killer
Philip - just makes me think of the queen's hideous husband!

Thanks for the other suggestions - keep them coming .

MmeLindt · 08/09/2009 08:00

I like Oliver but think that it is too popular at the moment in UK.

Nathaniel - I like, also like Nate. Sounds cool.

Ralph - makes me think of permatanned Ralph Lauren so no.

Edward - not keen

Jonathan - bit boring

Keir - ok

My suggestions:

Thomas

Phillip

Joseph

Matthew

piscesmoon · 08/09/2009 07:54

Jonathan and Edward are lovely.
Oliver and Nathaniel are OK.
Keir and Ralph-horrible.

pippylongstockings · 08/09/2009 07:50

I love Ralph - I really wanted to call our DS2 this but my DP always thought of the little boy who is bullied on the Simpsons.

Felix, Edward (Ted), Stanley, Wilfred, I like old man names - sorry!

coralanne · 08/09/2009 07:35

I know a dad called Oliver, his son is named Dexter, very cute little 3 year old. My son is Christian.

Clary · 08/09/2009 00:49

Oliver - very popular, one in every class. 3 in DS2's yr of 20 boys

Nat - pretty popular, don't persoanlly like the full version (bit of a mouthful)
Ralph ooo no
Jonathan - has the merit of originality
Edward I really like, quite a few about tho

Keir oh yes, good leftwing credentials. DS1 is named after a famous leftie we are a fan of (not that many people know that! it's not quite as obvious as Keir)

Rather liking Keir. I don't know a single one of anyage if that helps you

nooka · 07/09/2009 23:37

Keir is pretty cool if you have socialist leanings I think. We were going to call ds2 Ezra, which I still think is n excellent name, but he turned out to be dd instead

skybright · 07/09/2009 22:58

I like Kier have know quite a few ,i met a little boy called Tate today, quite like it ,i think.

devientenigma · 07/09/2009 22:51

Hi, I love Kier. Also like Efram and Corin. My ds is Brynley. HTH.

jkklpu · 07/09/2009 22:45

I know a baby Keir in NZ, much less common than the likes of Fergus, which is in the same category for me. If you like Scottish names, how about Ranald, Tammas, Angus or Tavis?

Agree Oliver is incredibly popular, as is Nathaniel/Nat (if MN threads to be believed, at least). But Theo more popular than lots of others.

If you're not sure about Edward, how Edmund, which is more unusual, or Eamonn, Irish form of Edmund?

Ninjacat · 07/09/2009 22:42

Ralph makes me think of that Judy Blume book "Forever" that I read when I was about 10. If you have read it you will never call your child Ralph, it would be too disturbing.

neverthoughtidask · 07/09/2009 22:42

thisisyesterday, that's exactly what dh said! But I would also like him to like the name and we just can't agree . But then I wouldn't have chosen the name he gave to DS1 so maybe I shouldn't worry about his opinion so much!!

Hmm, Cole, no, bit too different for me .

See, I think Ralphie is a lovely name but dh's parents' neighbour is called Ralph and he is a little old man of 85 and that is all dh thinks of when he thinks of the name - that or The Fast Show!

phoenix, I'd never heard of Keir Simmons so had to google him!

cookielove · 07/09/2009 22:37

oh wait i like ralph to, ralphy would be sooo cute, can't see it on a teenager but can as an older man
