We are trying to put together a shortlist for a baby girl. I had been v keen on Penelope but have had a couple of negative comments from family/ friends. It's still on the list but I have quite a few others on there too! We prefer something fairly unusual.

Penelope
Allegra
Vivian
Isadora
Genevieve
Francesca

Which do you all like/dislike?

If we used Penelope, would have Nell or maybe Poppy as a nn, as not keen on Penny.

I like Penelope but then ds is very into Thunderbirds right now.

penelopestrawberry · 11/09/2009 21:17

I think Eileen could get fashionable again

The only Penelopes I know are always called Penny-which I personally don't like, but think Penelope is due a revival.

Like Vivienne - the only half decent name Angelina Jolie has ever chosen.
Vivian reminds me of the young ones.

Isadora I like but think it is a very frilly name which you either love or hate.

Genevive is not to my taste. Neither is Allegra and Francesca is ok.

who'd want a boyfriend who judged you on your name????

i actually rather like genevieve. LOVE isadora thouigh

BonsoirAnna · 11/09/2009 20:24

I know a little 9 year old French girl called Eileen. Her parents obviously thought this name is beautiful....

penelopestrawberry · 11/09/2009 20:23

Maybe she could have a French sugar daddy Anna!

BonsoirAnna · 11/09/2009 20:05

Oh well, if you call her Genevieve at least you will be very sure she never ends up with a French boyfriend or husband

HarrietTheSpy · 11/09/2009 19:59

I like all of these choices. V much depends on your last name and any middle names.

Vivienne another nice spelling. COnsidered Genevieve ourselves at various pts as a family name.

Penelope
Allegra
Vivian
Isadora
Genevieve
Francesca

penelopestrawberry · 11/09/2009 19:54

BonsoirAnna- We don't live in France so I'm not to bothered how Genevieve is viewed over there. I think it a beautiful name, not 'horrid' and lots of other people seem to like it so it just shows how subjective these trends and fashions are! Perhaps, if I was French or lived in France, I might agree with you.

Love Penelope. Also like Verity which someone else suggested. Of the others on your list, I like Vivienne, but none of the others.

Prinpo · 11/09/2009 19:24

Love Isadora - could be Dora or Issy.
Francesca - nice but not great
Genevieve - great but I'd avoid if she'll have to spell her surname
Allegra - sorry, I'm not keen on that one
Vivienne - love
Penelope - love the abbreviations Penny and Nell

When all's said, though, whatever you really love will be perfect for her.

Deemented · 11/09/2009 19:05

Not keen on any of them to be honest, but Vivian is ok. I really like Verity.

MrsWuh · 11/09/2009 19:00

I think maybe Crumpette is confusing Genevieve with Guinevere!

Interesting that Genevieve is the French equivalent of Brenda or Maureen. You never can tell, can you?!

BonsoirAnna · 11/09/2009 18:49

I like Francesca best of all the names on your shortlist.

Genevieve is really horrid name - please don't inflict this on your child! (it is the French equivalent of Brenda or Maureen).

Spidermama · 11/09/2009 18:48

Penelope ... nope. too horsey
Allegra ... GORGEOUS. Vanessa Feltz's dd is called this. I love it.
Vivian ... Yep. Very nice. Due a comeback.
Isadora ... yep. nice.
Genevieve ... yep.
Francesca ... Nope. Even worse than Penelope.

shootfromthehip · 11/09/2009 18:43

I like Genevieve best, also like Francesca, Isadora, and Vivian. Not so keen on first two though.

crumpette · 11/09/2009 13:54

Allegra - yes
Vivian - hmm may look inspired by angelina et al
Isadora - love this, isadora duncan bad association....but I still love it
Genevieve - NO reminds me of the national lottery machine names
Francesca- nope went to school with lots myself, they were all irritating

penelopestrawberry · 11/09/2009 13:36

Thanks frazzle
Had wondered about Vivienne increasing in popularity post Jolie- Pitts.
I already have a DD with a name similar to Cecile so love that too!

OP posts:
pipsqueak · 11/09/2009 00:08

Penelope -not too
t keen
Allegra - love itn i think!
Vivian - yes
Isadora - yes
Genevieve - not so keen okay
Francesca yes but there are quite a few

CristinaTheAstonishing · 10/09/2009 23:52

Penelope, Isadora and Francesca were on our short list for DD2 (she's Heidi). I also like Vivien, sounds like DD1's name (Sylvia). Not keen on Allegra, doesn't it mean fast, e.g. in music notation?
