Is it cruel to call a child 'Teddy'?

Just wondering.. if named DS 'Theodore' would it be unbearably mean and bordering on child abuse to call him 'Teddy'?
thanks in advance for any sane outlook provided

Theodore is on our shortlist and I want to call him Teddy. He'll change it I'm sure when he gets big enough to find me embarrassing!

My DS is Theodore, but I call him Teddy. He is, however, only a week old so it's not like he can complain

When he is older he can choose whether he is Ted, Teddy, Theo or Theodore. I like them all

Theodore is a wonderful name. Theo, Ted, Teddy are all great nn's. However, if you want Teddy then please put Edward or Theodore on the birth certificate.

I have a Teddy who is 19 months and adorable. We do sometimes call him Ted and I'm sure we will do so more as he gets older.

It's a cool name.

For several reasons, and for two posters i KNEW would turn up on this thread, I have to post to say how adorable Teddy is.

Cute on a toddler, fun for a little boy, and warm, dependable and noble as Ted when older in life.

I have an Edward and he is sometimes Teddy and I think it really suits him

We have a Theodore, known as Theo, and I did actually worry about him being called Teddy, as I think it's ok as a child, but not as a grown up. Having said that, a friend of mine has a (christened) Teddy, called Ted or Teddy, and it really suits him.

Teddy is a brilliant name, as is Ted.

I would personally go with Theodore or Edward and then shorten it, therefore giving the child a more grown-up alternative to choose when they get older. But then I'm a bit old-fashioned about nicknames-as-names.

The only trouble would be if there were two Teds in one class: one big, one little

glad some Teddies are in existence and not suffering as a result!

I still think it's really cute, bound to be vetoed by DP though.. can't have Edward as already in use by family member.. argh..

I have a Theodore who is Teddy to family, and haven't had any memorable comments about it. He is still little though, so I guess we might graduate to Theo or something when he's a bit older? Depends what sticks really!

I quite often refer to him as Theo when I'm talking to people I don't know, and it sounds really weird to me...

Go for Edward, then use Teddy as a nickname. Being a Teddy will not serve him well in adult life
