We're hippies at heart, and I regret choosing such a 'normal' name for DS1 - help please for DS2?!

DS1 is Ethan. We gave him a really really rare hippy-sounding middle name, but I wish we'd been braver and gone for something more unusual for his first name. I don't want to do the same this time...

I like Asher but I think it's about to become really popular. We also love celtic / old english names.

Suggestions?

But nobody will ever EXPECT a Maria to be a Catholic. Or say "Sorry, what was that?" when she says her name. Or say "How do you spell that?" or "Oh, that's unusual!" EVERY SINGLE TIME she gives her name for the rest of her life. Maria's staff won't snigger behind their hands at her name, or make jokes about her name. She will never feel the slightest hesitation at giving her name to someone, even if she is a spotty undersized 12 year old. Or a tubby middle aged grandma. And the staff in the old people's home won't laugh at her.

Oh boo to no literal names, our ds is Sky/Skyler (Schuyler anglicised/mispelt. It is a name, no matter what Seeker thinks ).

I loved Leon and Emil but dh vetoed cos of his french surname (and we are not french). Not v hippy though.

I love Ivo at the moment. Asa is also lovely. I would love to be brave enough to have a Thor.

Anything like river / fox / ocean / heath can't go with our surname, because it is also a noun - a geographical noun. So anything too literal as the first name sounds like a topographical feature rather than a name iyswim.

Merlin, Orion, Jupiter

Andromeda, Aurora, Luna for girls

I love Luna & Orion but DH vetoed both as too hippy

there are some cool moon names too - Io, Callisto

Heath came very close to being ds1's name... and then ds2's name too! As did Reed (but getting too popular now).

I thought about Ascher rather than Asher - but it will still SOUND the same, y'know? And I have this feeling it will become very popular in the next few years...
Does anyone else think so or is it just me?

Personally I don't much liek River or Fox, but I do consider them to be hippyish names.

I would love to call a boy Wolf or Wulf (old english version) but I don't think DP would go for it.

Also like Inigo. Asher is lovely too.

We called our DS a very very unusual name but it can be shortened to something that is a better-known (though rare) name - however that shortened version is now becoming more popular. There's not much you can do about it but I'm pleased that the full-length version is still unique. That's one route you could go down. Or use the old english spelling Aeschere, though it wouldn't make life easy...

Other OE names... Hengest, Aelfric (shorten to Alfie), Cnut (maybe not...), Beowulf, Eadwacer (Eddie)... ooh and I just found a website here

I think there are plenty or "proper" names that fit your criteria without going for something as whacky as Ocean. Ooodles of Celtic/old English names.
