We have chosen a name for a girl and are thinking of Otto or Tibo for a boy....

Otto is nicer, imo. I knew a Zachary of German Jewish descent whose middle name was Otto (an old family name for the family).

MissGreatBritain · 28/08/2009 23:50

otto vaguely ok, but tibo is awful.

Tinfoil · 28/08/2009 23:35

Sorry, I don't like either.

puddinghead · 28/08/2009 22:49

Otto is a great name - believe it's making a come back actually in German/Nordic countries hulabula, in same way as, say, Arthur and George are here.

I've come across a few Audreys and Cyrils in France - now there's a case for smirking

LongtimeinBrussels · 28/08/2009 22:13

Spelling of Thibaut/Thibault here.

hulabula · 28/08/2009 21:59

Otto is awful imo - in German/Nordic languages, Otto is a really awful, old fashioned name that is often joked about! Would be cruel to name a child this name in any German speaking country!!

Thibault is very nice, on the other hand!

It is the sound and the simplicity of the name i like. as i'm not french the german spelling makes more sense to me.

Tibo looks made-up and now you say it is (the spelling). If you like Thibault, choose that - it's a name. Or, as you don't seem to have any need to have a cultural connection with the names you're considering, go for Tibor, which is Hungarian.

Firawla · 28/08/2009 21:45

Otto is better, don't like the sp Tibo

bettybeetroot · 28/08/2009 21:40

sorry respelt!

it isn't repelt(!) dh worked with a guy with the spelling tibo - i think he was belgian. tibo is also a german name...

Naetha · 28/08/2009 21:36

Tibo makes it look like you can't spell Thibault.

BonsoirAnna · 28/08/2009 21:34

I don't think that Thibault respelt as Tibo "works" at all.

Tambajam · 28/08/2009 21:30

Tibo is too much like Tivo in my book. Otto is better.

allaboutme · 28/08/2009 21:28

Otto much nicer
Tibo sounds like brand of TV

bettybeetroot · 28/08/2009 21:26

I actually prefer the french spelling thibault but thought the spelling tibo might be 'easier'

DS2 has a friend whose name's Timo (nickname as his real name is Sébastien). He also has a friend called Thibaut which is (pretty much) pronounced Tibo. FWIW I much prefer Timo (not sure why though!). Otto reminds me of "A Fish Called Wanda".

MrsVik · 28/08/2009 21:10

It can also be spelt Timo - I teach one.

BonsoirAnna · 28/08/2009 21:09

The Thimo I know certainly doesn't get nicknamed Tim. It's pronounced Tee-Mo

bettybeetroot · 28/08/2009 21:06

everlong - if we choose otto we will use oscar as the middle name!
