Finty - made up name or does it come from somewhere?

We have decided to call our DD Finty - we have both loved the name since hearing Judi Dench mention its her daughters name in an interview some years back. However we have no idea whether it was made up or actually comes from somewhere - we dont really care but know someone will ask us once she is born and the name becomes public - any idea??

Oh! I didn't notice it was a zombie thread!

OP could be the mum of the Finty I know, hello friend! Just in case... Grin

As to what to say about it, well the explanation you've given here - why not?

bugsybill · 04/07/2013 22:07

I know it is an old thread but I quite like Finty.

Felicity also popped into my head as being the more substantial full name but I agree you could get away with just Finty if you have a surname that goes well. Also I think Fiona would be a nice full name for it.

I wonder if the op named her daughter this.

Moominsarehippos · 04/07/2013 22:05

I wonder if little Finty is about to start school?

nooka · 04/07/2013 22:01

I've just noticed this thread is 4 years old!

nooka · 04/07/2013 21:59

Sounds to me like a very upper class kind of girl's nick name. I imagine 'Oh, Finty darling' in my head. Sorry! I have a really unusual name, but would not like to be called Finty at all. Lacks gravitas.

MothershipG · 04/07/2013 21:43

DD's mate's littlest sister is called Finty, unusual bit not especially remarkable, I don't think it has caused a strong reaction, we are in London, not sure if that makes a difference?

GwendolineMaryLacey · 04/07/2013 21:39

I really like it. I think if I was called it I'd like to have a backstory though. As "no it's not a nickname, dunno where it came from" would be very wearing and not very exciting. As borne out by Seeker's guest!

Cohenite · 04/07/2013 21:34

' Felicity' popped into my mind when I read the name Finty. Just a thought :)

finty123 · 04/07/2013 21:29

also im 14

finty123 · 04/07/2013 21:28

my name's Finty and no one gives me weird looks when i say its not a nickname. i like that its different it means that no one has the same name as me. its not weird at all. and all of you people that say its weird are just not open to new ideas.

mathanxiety · 21/08/2009 08:01

Or even Flinty?

It sounds like a reasonable name for a puppy...

KnickKnack · 20/08/2009 13:11

Finty is short for the boys name Fintan (in Ireland)...have never heard anyone under the age of about 50 with the shortened version though

TheDMHatesMe · 20/08/2009 13:06

It is lovely. Can't believe people are being quite so vehement about it. Good for you Mini, for your composed response!

Remotew · 20/08/2009 13:02

I quite like it. I probably would give an unmade up name that could be turned into the nickname Finty and therefore changed back if your DD doesn't like having an unusual name. Not sure why perhaps I'm too conventional.

I think Finty is lovely, just use it and sod what people say.

fin42 · 20/08/2009 00:10

I have a similar name, Finda, it wasn't made up as it's a name from Sierra Leone, where I was born.
I doubt that there's any connection to Finty (which I like btw) but I thought I might add:
Yes, I frequently have to explain it;People often think it's either Irish or Scandanavian:it will probably get shortened to Fin by friends( which is actually quite 'cool'atm); 'unusual' names are much more popular now than they were when I was growing up; and despite all this I don't hate my parents for it. It's a pretty name as is Finty imho.

PacificDogwood · 19/08/2009 21:32

I like it.

But agree with above poster, go for conventional middle name. This will give her a choice which "flavour" of name to use when she runs for Prime Minister .

And, anyway, doesn't everybody hate their first name? I know I did when I was primary age and I have perfectly normal, non-rhyming, non-weird first name. In fact, I would have loved something glamourous and exotic like, ooohh, dunno, Arrabella or ... Finty .

Tidey · 19/08/2009 21:29

I really don't like it either, I'm probably very boring when it comes to made-up names, but clearly you have made up your mind and nothing a load of strangers on a screen are saying will make the slightest difference. Good luck and best wishes to you.

MaggieBeauLeo · 19/08/2009 21:23

Fionnuala + any name beginning with T = Finty?.

MaggieBeauLeo · 19/08/2009 21:21

I don't like it. sounds like a boys name but finty williams looks really lovely

pogleswife · 19/08/2009 20:05

What about Finnuala ( finnoola) with Finty for short ?

AspasiaManos · 19/08/2009 18:10

SoupDragon - your name rhymes? You poor thing.

I have a weird made up name which people constantly mix up with another, more common, name. It is a mighty pain the ass, frankly, to be called something other than your real name day in, day out.

SoupDragon · 19/08/2009 18:05

"if its the only thing in our lives that our DD 'hates us for' as one person says - they hey that is fine with me"

But will it be OK with her. You are naming her. You won't have to carry the name off, she will. I speak as someone who had to "carry off" a stupid rhyming name because my parents "loved it" and were "happy with it" but they didn't have to put up with 29 years of sniggering and teasing because if it did they?
