Good solid boys names, like James and Thomas... but not them?

I like James and Thomas, but can't have them as other family members have already nabbed them! Any suggestions for similar traditional, "solid" boys names? TIA x

James and Thomas among the most popular names for my DCs' pals.

Using that as a yardstick, here are the others:

Oliver
Matthew
Joseph
Jacob
Daniel
Jack
And Samuel too!

( @ Adam being underused name! How so??? Not here certainly)

There's one called Peter Sam. Considering there are about 60 different characters in the Thomas series, that would be an awful lot of boys' and girls' names to avoid.

Actually James and Thomas remind me of a certain pair of helpful trains. You're much better off with Sam.

My DH just made a suggestion - a traditional boy's name for an ardent republican.

Oliver.

(Edward and George are the best boys names ever but they are all so naughty. Delicious but naughty)

Bruffin - a solid and dependable baby is what I'm after! I feel all excited now I'm settled on Samuel. Now I just have to make sure my DH doesn't go off the idea in the next 9 weeks...

I have a Sam (Samuel) as well. He is a teenager now and it really suits him, solid and dependable type.

Yes purepurple, very handy to have a name you can shorten but then use in full to tell them off! I like both Samuel and Sam. I suggested Sam to my DH a few weeks ago, and he said he wasn't keen. But when I just read out "Samuel" he said "ooh I like that!"

Bless him, don't think he's made the connection!

I am going to stick with Samuel I think.

mostly Sam, these days.
I don't normally have to tell him off much which is when he usually gets Samuel

Also, Simon is really underused these days- it's BIL's name and gets shortened to Sim which I like.

Thanks for these excellent suggestions. I'm really liking Samuel (and my DH also likes it!)

Love Alexander too, but yet AGAIN, it's been used by a cousin. Damn my large family and their excellent choice in baby names!
