so, some friends of ours have one child and are thinking of calling their next child a name which will make them an infamous pairing ie it's not Myra and Ian but we're getting there. So, I said, ooh, have you thought of the connections to blah they hadn't but now apparently the name is ruined and they don't like any other.Should i have said anything and if you were in danger of calling your kids 'fred and rose' or something else like that would you rather someone pointed it out?

It's amazing how much of a bubble some people live in. Far better to have it mentioned before they were named.

Chunkamatic · 19/08/2009 18:28

My nieces are Hollie and Jessica, and until you pointed it out in this thread I would have never made the connection. i understand why they might be a bit miffed with you, I would feel like it was a bad omen to go ahead with the name after someone had pointed that out...

nickelbabe · 19/08/2009 12:05

i see why the connection might cause comment by other people.

could you suggest similar but equally pretty names?

like if the current girl is Holly, then maybe Erica or Heather as they are both plant names (Erica actually means Heather), or Daisy or Laura?

and if it's Jessica, then Erica goes well with that too, or Eleanor, or Charlotte, Katherine?

VAB · 19/08/2009 11:12

I wouldn't have made the connection, so wouldn't have made comment.

I can see why it has ruined the name for them.

oysterpots · 19/08/2009 10:26

Will it be that way round, ie not Jessica and Holly? Makes a slight difference.

And if they nn Jess I think it would be less obvious... but if they asked for your opinion I think it's fair enough you gave it. YANBU!

PuppyMonkey · 18/08/2009 15:31

God, I think Bonnie and Clyde would be totally fabulous names for your kids..

skyblu · 18/08/2009 15:25

Holly & Jessica are beautiful names and they do go together.
I wouldn't have made the connection and I wouldn't have said anything even if I had, because they are not a 'bad'or negative name coupling. Just two beautiful little girls.

However,

Fred & Rose
Myra & Ian
Bonnie & Clyde

Yes - as they are all clearly bad/negative name couplings that you wouldn't want your children associated with.

chandellina · 18/08/2009 15:19

i would never have noticed it and i probably wouldn't say anything either unless it was something really egregious. they are two common names and sorry about the girls' deaths but I don't think the two names together have much notoriety.

sleeplessinstretford · 11/08/2009 10:05

i would say the Ronnie and Reggie thing was deliberate.
If they'd named her then it's too late-but prior to then i think if someone asks you for an opinion you give one...do you not?

nappyaddict · 11/08/2009 02:52

Would you mention it if the baby had already been born and named though? I know twins called Ronnie and Reggie and am often curious as to whether they know the history behind these two names (even more so cos they have twins not just brothers called Ronnie and Reggie and it seems way too much of a coincidence) or whether they did know and it didn't bother them.

kitkatqueen · 11/08/2009 01:38

I would have mentioned it.

jauntinthesurf · 11/08/2009 01:25

Yes I would have mentioned.

MaggieBelleVirgo · 10/08/2009 20:20

my dd has two friends called this, and I have to admit, I am one who does make the connection and I have to push it out of my head when I hear their names together (as I often do). Those girls went missing just before my dd was born.

liliputlady · 10/08/2009 19:39

Yes, I would have definitely wanted that pointing out - you did the right thing.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 10/08/2009 18:51

I don't think it's that obvious.

I actually thought you were going to say Fred and Rose!!

GirlsAreLoud · 10/08/2009 18:44

Yes I would say something. If it doesn't bother them then fine but if it hadn't occurred to them then did later and they didn't like it you would have regretted staying schtum.

screamingabdab · 10/08/2009 18:41

I'm surprised they didn't make the link themselves. I think I would have had to say something, in the circs of two murdered children

Pollyanna · 10/08/2009 16:59

I don't think I'd have known the connection.

I thought you were going to say Fred and Rose!

MorrisZapp · 10/08/2009 16:58

I'd have said something.

MamaLazarou · 10/08/2009 16:35

Yes, I would also have said something. But then, I am a big-mouth.

clumsymum · 10/08/2009 15:16

I don't think I would have made the connection either, so in a few more years it's even less likely.

However, if I had made the connection, I think I might feel obliged to mention it.

crokky · 10/08/2009 14:50

Both are lovely names, but I think I would have said something as well.

sleeplessinstretford · 10/08/2009 14:47

they are both nice names-i was merely commenting on the association and not the niceness of the names, i wouldn't dare in real life to say 'i dislike that name' as it's not my business-but it immediately sprang to mind for me so i assumed it'd do the same with others.

FAQtothefuture · 10/08/2009 14:46

I have to confess I wouldn't have made the connection - so no I wouldn't have pointed it out.

Tinker · 10/08/2009 14:45

Loads of girls are called Holly and Jessica. I don't think it's particularly noticeable as a coupling.
