Which names do you predict to be the next big thing?
Those not currently very popular but there'll be loads in a few years?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
wilkos · 30/07/2009 21:54

lily and maggie is next choice maggievirgo!

well actually marianne but maggie for short

please everyone don't all tell me you know loads of mariannes now as well. there was me thinking i was being all original and you lot have totally rained on my parade

NotanOtter · 30/07/2009 21:54

next big thing names are names people LOVE

i call my children names that trip off my tongue lightly but are frequently greeted with a dull yet deafening thud

no chance there then

Lori73 · 30/07/2009 21:49

well, have a look at this which is an American link from my American sister in law! So I guess it's not necessarily reflective of what will follow here. Also, she and her American friends are a bit surprised by the attitude sometimes expressed on mumsnet that 'you shouldn't use a [insert - French/German/Dutch] name if you are not [insert - French/German/Dutch]' and so it's interesting how multicultural this list is! Some of the choices I find surprising!

Wilkos, you're 'too late' with Sylvie lol. 7 years ago my dc1 was almost a Sylvie! Went for Margot in the end. There are others out there, not as old mind you. Or, well, much older or a few years younger.

4 yrs ago, my son was actually going to be Bruno, and for the first time in a long time, I'm glad I didn't go with that. (Sacha Baron Cohen's film). ...

What about Susie?! I think that that may rise, as an alternative to Sophie, but I don't think it's going to be so class-specific, like Esme... dykwim?! NOt so bourgeois ! It'll be an across the board rise which will go pretty much unnoticed because it won't be cropping up in similar circles again and again.

Lily and Suzy or Lily and Christa? Lily and Maggie?

NotanOtter · 30/07/2009 21:37

next big thing

Hector
Gus
Cecilly
Clemmy ( boys/girls)
Violet
Kitty
Romilly
Inigo
Cassius ( sorry but i feel it in my bones)

tummytickler · 30/07/2009 21:36

wilkos - i know a Sylvie too, but she is about 4

NotanOtter · 30/07/2009 21:34

i know a Sylvie

hester · 30/07/2009 21:32

Um, wilkos, I know a baby Sylvie...

Botbot · 30/07/2009 21:16

I think Mary, Susan, Jane too. Possible dd2 will be Mary, I think. (dd1 has quite an unusual name)

wilkos · 30/07/2009 21:09

NO! NOT SYLVIE!!

my unborn dc 2 will be sylvie because i have never heard of another one!

dc 1 is lily, which 50 billion other little girls are called. didnt want to make the same mistake.

tummytickler · 30/07/2009 21:06

I think the next names to see a rise in popularity (although maybe not top 10)

Penelope, Ophelia, Dorothea, Violet, Rosemary,Josephine, Elsie. Kitty and Florence already very popular in my town i know at least 4 of each

Gilbert, Albert, Raphael, Conrad, Bruno.

I am sad to see my 8 year olds name here (Iris), but hopefully she will be a teenager by the time it is massively popular.
I worry about Jean and Hilda. If i love them then the chances are that others do too and when my lo goes to school she will be in a class of 5 Hildas!
I am OK with boys i think - nobody ever likes my boys names!

maggievirgo · 30/07/2009 20:29

These names won't be popular but I thnk they are the next 'unusual' names to seem attractive to the urbane urban chic brigade.

Vivien, Sylvie, Margot, Belinda, Donna, Lois, Dulcie (dulcie is the new Esme,Sylvie is the new Sophie).

Bruce, Victor, Donald, Howard, Richie
Bruce is the new Gus
Victor is the new Hector
Richie is the new Archie.

dizzydixies · 30/07/2009 20:24

oh please not hyphens - as a hyphen sufferer

Nancy66 · 30/07/2009 19:29

Would agree with Violet - becoming very popular and quite a few celebs have used it in the past couple of years. Think it will be the new Ruby

Sycamoretreeisvile · 30/07/2009 19:28

Coco.

Honestly. It will be.

MrsMattie · 30/07/2009 19:19

Increasingly obscure old man/lady names.

Previously posh names - Augusta, Octavia and Araminta are being discussed on this board right now.

70s names have got to be due a come back. I've already heard of littler girls called Caroline, Suzanne and Diana. Michelle, Debbie, Wendy are coming any minute, I tell ya...

Fillyjonk · 30/07/2009 15:45

A lot of these names are already quite popular though

Either a name needs to steadily climb up the charts, gaining popularity, until it is decreed too popular, OR something needs to give it a kick into people's consciousness, as happened with Isla (Fisher sp?), Darcy, Alfie etc.

I wonder also about names like Mary, Susan, Jane, Elizabeth etc. They are great names, especially together.

We are def due a resurgence of full names not abbreviations, imo.

teddygirl23 · 30/07/2009 15:40

alice i think could be the number one name very soon.

HuffwardlyRouge · 30/07/2009 11:14

I think Susan is due a big resurgence in popularity.

Mary too.

Both great names.

gero · 30/07/2009 11:13

Violet
Velvet
Vivien

goodasgold · 30/07/2009 00:41

Sheila and Linda

Brian and Paul

hisnibster · 30/07/2009 00:32

Don't know if these are already popular, but I'm hearing lots of children called:
Esme, Darcey, Dexter and Toby.
There's a big fashion for names with hyphens around here too.

hmc · 30/07/2009 00:04

Philip
Nigel
Martin
Geoffrey
Simon

etc

  • i.e. names that were popular in the late 60's and 70's...its all cyclical. They will be in vogue again at some point, it is just a matter of when
