Araminta, is this too posh?

Sorry to be so blunt in the title.
Araminta is my new love. I just think it is really pretty and not over popular or silly.
My worry is that it is too posh.
What do you think and what are your opinions of the name? Help!

The MOONDIAL!!!

Devil's child, devil's child, devil's child... [dance round moondial chanting ad infinitum]

Sorry, that's all totally meaningless unless you remember the TV programme.

You could call her 'Arry' for short rather than 'Minty' ?

1dilemma · 30/07/2009 00:28

I wasn't sneering it's lovely very feminine I wish I was brave enought to give my kids really classical funky names (not the made up stuff)

Mintyy · 30/07/2009 00:12

Am quite frankly insulted with all these sneery comments.

Surely its the most faaaaabulous name?

1dilemma · 30/07/2009 00:11

yes lovely and posh a distant friend has one (a dd called this) and it so suits him and the way he'd like you to believe he is
(agree with octavia etc for sisters too)

not brave enough to use such names

wrongun · 30/07/2009 00:05

At pony club, no.
I knew one called Minty Binty.

hmc · 30/07/2009 00:00

I had Celeste (boak) on my pregnancy list - until mercifully I came to my senses.

ClaudiaSchiffer · 29/07/2009 23:59

I love Minty, Araminta though is a bit of a mouthful.

Minty was on my list for dd2 along with Dolly, Queenie, Lettice and Pearl.

But then I was deranged with pregnancy hormones.

hmc · 29/07/2009 23:53

Yes it is v. posh - and it will seem incongruous unless you have the income, lifestyle and social circle that goes with it.

AnybodyHomeMcFly · 29/07/2009 23:52

Very posh but also nice. She will have to own a horse tho.

piscesmoon · 29/07/2009 23:45

It won't be posh when she is known as Minty. I think Arabella is better, as Bella is much prettier than Minty or Mints.

simplesusan · 29/07/2009 23:38

Oooooooo I am liking this name.

noddyholder · 28/07/2009 22:29

I know one everyone calls her Mints!I do like it though very pretty

TheBolter · 28/07/2009 22:25

It's a bit too try-hard for my liking.

scotagm · 28/07/2009 22:05

Sounds like a brand of ice-cream - don't know why but that's my first reaction.

Mybox · 28/07/2009 20:33

Why's it posh? Doesn't sound posh to me.

Joycey29 · 28/07/2009 20:32

It is posh - but I do love it - DO IT!

oysterpots · 28/07/2009 20:01

I quite like it but can't imagine calling a child Araminta. It's in the same box as:
Plum
Cosima
Octavia

All names I like in theory but wouldn't be anywhere near the top of a baby name list.

Mintyy · 28/07/2009 16:58

Its pure class darling. What a wonderful choice! Of course you must go for it - I insist.

Jux · 28/07/2009 16:53

I don't think it's posh at all.

pointydog · 28/07/2009 16:46

yes, to oposh

stripes200 · 28/07/2009 16:41

I like quite posh, real, trad, English names but Araminta is a bit too much.

Arabella is nicer.

Terpsichore · 28/07/2009 16:41

There used to be a journalist called Minty Clinch, which always made me shudder with a kind of weird horror, for some reason. It just wasn't right iyswim. So I think its acceptability depends a lot on your surname. I have nothing against 'posh' names per se (I have one myself ), but have to admit that I'm a bit resistant to Araminta. It would probably be shortened by all and sundry, though, whether you liked it or not!

justlookatthatbooty · 28/07/2009 16:31

Love it. Yes, kind of posh but who cares?
Who gives a toss if others think it's posh? Whole lot of opinionated hot air on here about name choices anyway. And as for those in your circle of friends....Once they know your DD to be a lovely gal, their associations will bef formed around that and not something else. For those on the fringe of her life who cares?
Stick to your guns, not worth compromising with a name that you like less just to conform to the opinions of others.

Good luck

gingerbunny · 28/07/2009 16:05

i'm sorry it sounds like a horse.

maggievirgo · 28/07/2009 15:57

It's not just posh, it's a parody of posh.

And, it's not very nice..

Arianne or Marianne much better.
