Were you teased because of your name?

If so, was it because your name is unusual? Would you choose a different name if you could? Do you know anyone who wasn't teased about their name?

Seems like some people are pretty scared to pick anything out of the ordinary in case their DC might be teased - I always thought people found something to tease you about, if not your first name then your surname, or the way you look, or what your family's like.

Am I wrong? Genuine questions.

Alexandra

3of Alexander is a *fantastic and wonderful name, and you are sooooo lucky to have it.

notsoteenagemum · 22/07/2009 20:19

I hated my surname because no-one could spell it even though it was two commonly used words put together and then to make matters worse my history teacher said it was what people used to call the toilet so I got called Crapper or Shitter.

That was the least of my worries though I got both arms broken for 'walking like a slag.'

MrsEricBana · 22/07/2009 20:10

Teased here too - first name and surname for different reasons - surname had links to a nursery rhyme so no end of mileage there and first name is Gail so was constantly getting windy, hurricane, force 9 etc - oh yes, very funny. Even teased because the school bully was an unfortunate looking lad called "X Gale" - "Ooh, are you his sister?" etc. Do think kids will always find a reason to tease if they want to though.

mummiesnet · 22/07/2009 19:59
Hmm
mummiesnet · 22/07/2009 19:58

Yes.

Surname.

Roper.

Groper.

Not bullied though, people attempted to tease, and I gave them this face

My not by, obviously.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 22/07/2009 19:57

Not so much, someone tried out Jack the lad but soon stopped when they realised it didnt bother me and nobody else was calling it me!

MaybeAfterBreakfast · 22/07/2009 19:56

No, because I have a very 'normal' name (was teased/bullied for lots of other reasons though).

By brother was bullied mercilessly because of his (Jeremy). Was a very rough area of Manchester where Jeremys were rather thin on the ground. Seem to remember every 2nd boy was called Gary or Darren (Gaz or Daz in practice).

janeite · 22/07/2009 19:56

I got teased for my surname, rather than first name - and for being skinny. I guess there will always be something they find to focus on, if so determined.

FAQtothefuture · 22/07/2009 19:53

I don't think it was so much my name, it was just another way to bully me by making fun of my name.

mummag · 22/07/2009 19:52

how bizarre my name is Gwen too!!!! I wasnt teased for thegwen part it was the gwendoline bit. Also i have a surname that also starts with a G, nice, kids (and grown ups) love that!!!!

artifarti · 22/07/2009 19:51

"Plain Jane Super-Brain" for feckin years. Bloody Neighbours.

And to add insult to injury I also have a ludicrous surname...

cookielove · 22/07/2009 19:47

I was teased and bullied almost the whole way through secondary school, and also in the last year of primary school.

Both my names have recieved a fair share of bullying, although i was bullied for lots of other reasons to. My favourite day of school was my last!!

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 22/07/2009 19:40

my surname, whilst not unusual (tis Poole) caused much amusement for some who like to call me 'MyCatIs swimming poole'

God I was glad to get married and change my name! (obviously glad cause I love DH of course )

TAFKAtheUrbanDryad · 22/07/2009 19:38

I wasn't teased because of my name, but because of my initials which were ET.

Even the teachers joined in, fgs. I didn't stand a chance.

Wilts · 22/07/2009 19:35

I got:

Carry on
Carrier bag
Caravan

And the trusty old Hollies song sung to me on many occasions

ludog · 22/07/2009 19:35

My name is Marianne and I have spent my whole life correcting people who can't get heir head around the fact that I am neither Marion or Maryanne (I actually shudder at Maryanne ewwww.... apologies to any Maryannes or parents of same!) I love my name though and I wouldn't change it.

HecatesTwopenceworth · 22/07/2009 19:34

erm. I think that last sentence does not read quite how I intended it.

HeadFairy · 22/07/2009 19:34

Are you called Bob wrinklytum?

HecatesTwopenceworth · 22/07/2009 19:33

Yes. A lot. I have an uncommon name, a sort of elderly aunt name and I got a lot of stick for it.

but tbh, it really wasn't about the name. Kids who like to bully will find something to use. what it is, is irrelevant. They used my big fat arse more than my name!!

differentID · 22/07/2009 19:33

yes. every sodding day.
It's Maria.

How do you solve a problem like Maria, nearly everyday from teachers at my high school, especially stupid as I was a goody two-shoes.

wrinklytum · 22/07/2009 19:33

I was teased about mine as it is unisex.

I was a teen in the 1980's and "Blackadder" was very popular,at the time.....

janeite · 22/07/2009 19:31

I went to school with a lovely Gwen; have never, ever met another one. I don't think she was teased - it seems a fairly straightforward sort of name, non?
