Were you teased because of your name?

My name is Dawn and I got, 'up the crack of dawn' all the time, that and 'sunrise'. Having red hair also meant that complete strangers would ask my what colour my pubes were. I like to think it was character forming!

wrinklytum I think we have the same name... Blackadder, Not the 9 o'clock News and a certain autumnal tree? I was lucky because there was another girl in my year at school (and one of my best friends) who shared my name, so we didn't get the 'isn't that a boys' name?' thing.

I have a boring, ordinary one-syllable name, very popular in the 60s and 70s. I still got people rhyming it with all sorts of other words. I hate my name and deliberately gave my children unusual and nicer-sounding names.

I used to get smelly Melly, even though I wasn't.

My middle name is Jayne, and I used to get Melanie Jayne is a pain.

My first surname was Ward, and I used to get called Wart all the time as well.

It was a no win situation really.

I was teased a tiny bit at school mostly because I insisted on my full name (my family still call me that) or Ali/Lexie, as I thought Alex was too boyish. More for freckles really though.

Once I reached college, I realised Alex was a pretty cool name, and more feminine because of it's boyish connections. I've always liked it, and am pleased my parents chose something interesting. In fact I feel quite miffed if I ever meet another one!

I am a Josephine and have never forgiven my parents, however much I love them. All though my life it has been "not tonight...". Ha Ha Ha. Thank goodness my maiden name was ordinary but then I married a Scotsman with a polish surname - no wonder I still use my maiden name at work and we have called our children plain (but lovely) names - have always thought that if you have to have an unusual first or surname, it is cruel to make the other name a bit off the wall as well !

I do know someone called Robert Robins. But I keep having to think whether it's Robert Robins or Robin Roberts.... I'm not even sure now.

I really like my unusual name. In my home country people would forever pronounce it wrong and I've always had to spell it. But it doesn't rhyme with anything and it can't be shortened so it was impossible to be teased about. Now, living in the UK, whilst my first name is still very unusual people seem ok with the pronounciation. But now my very foreign surname causes all sorts of problems. I do like it though. People never forget having met me or having heard my name somewhere.

My Maiden name rhymed with Whore, so I was always called 'frasersmum whore', if not, then 'ginger whore', or 'ginga minga', or 'Alex the Kid' because I once had a very unfortunate haircut.

I also got asked if I had sunbathed under a sieve every day of my life!

Um the only name I associate with Kate Bush is "Cathy!". I'd be amazed if anyone ever wrote a song with my name in it! I don't think it has ever been mentioned on the MN name threads, and I've never met another. There is now a model and a comediene with my name though, so you never know.

Like Nooka, I have an unusual first name, and I was teased at school, but not primarily for my name. I suffered because my Dad was headmaster of the junior school a lot of us were at. Then we moved to the other side of the country and I didn't have any problems.

Also get the mis-spelling and mis-pronounciation but agree it's a minor gripe as I've always loved my name.

I have a fairly unusual name (I'm wondering whether it's the same 'Cornish' name that someone else mentioned further down the thread). I was bullied a little both at primary and secondary school, but not for my name.

I did however spend time at primary school pretending that my name was Clare (my middle name) as I was aware that my name was different. Now I love it, and in combo with my surname I am apparently the only person with my name in the country...

I have a very unusual first name (which I love) and I was teased at school. But never about my name. I do get it speeled and pronounced oddly at times, but I'm not too bothered about that, as mostly peopel say very nice things about it, generally I am remembered easily, and I can use my first name only pretty much all the time, which I like. The only thing that irriates is recpetionists asking for my name, saying "what/pardon" and then obviously not telling the person who I want to talk to anyway, as I then have to give my name again. But that's a fairly minor gripe.

I've had the shortening thing too, but I just explain that if they call me that then I just won't respond, as it's not my name. It's never not worked

People vaguely attempted to tease me about my unusual and harsh sounding surname (I totally blame bloody Eastenders).

But to be honest I would just give them a long stare and say something fairly deadpan like "öh right. you're trying to make fun of my name. I get it - it's a funny namë." - whilst all the while making face.

But saying all that I was thrilled when I married my DH who and now have probably the 5th most common surname in the country.

My original name was an unfortunate word (think male appendage....)

And my maiden name rhymed with some unfortunate words.

For 31 years, and counting, people have sung my name at me.

Got the mickey taken out of my surname.

Changed it within days of my 16th birthday and then got the piss taken out of me by one guy for changing it.

He ended up being my first serious boyfriend !
