Re the virtue names -its a bit hard exoecting a chils (or anyone ) to live uop to a virtue though isn't it.Sod's law dictates they'll be the opposite.I mean if i was Patience or Charity or Hope I'd be scuppered as I'm a bad tempered ,tight fisted old bint !

fishie · 17/07/2009 22:56

my own name is rather dull.

i'd be very happy with boudicca

fishie · 17/07/2009 22:53

this thread is lurching from prejudice to ignorance and back again.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 22:46

katiestar - but I probably taught more "virtue" named children than I did anything other name (Shona, Ndbele, English) when I was in Zimbabwe. No-one there thought it was "asking for trouble".

And lets not forget - many "English" names - have meanings which are virtues anyhow.....

my dd goes to school with

Fanula Christadula.

and thats not a joke although im sure she must bring a smile to everyones face that she meets bless her heart.

she gets fanu for short,

my sister is a teacher and says she would have to leave the room

we cried laughing cos she said what if someone said "that'll do for now fanu"

i know we shouldnt laugh but that poor child....

cookielove · 17/07/2009 22:42

so being called cornflake is perfectly normal is it, not at all a bit odd, and it did happen!

katiestar · 17/07/2009 22:42

Its names like princess Tiaami -just sound ridiculous to me.

katiestar · 17/07/2009 22:40

Fern ,basil ,Cuthbert, - all awesome names and xerxes I like too

HerHonesty · 17/07/2009 22:36

quite honestly i think having "worst names" and quietly judging people is as bad, if not worse then having "worst names" and being upfront about them.

katiestar · 17/07/2009 22:35

I think calling your child after a virtue is just begging for trouble

Love Portia and Mercedes

Like 'trillion'- anyone remember the 1970s Nicholas Fisk sci-fi book 'Trillions'

5inthebed · 17/07/2009 22:31

When I lived in South Africa, our (black) cleaning lady had two sons called Innocence and Evidence. I also knew a Patience, Twinkle and Rhubarb. They probably thought my name was very odd.

Love the 30 ghetto names btw. I am going to change my name by deed poll to Bananapudashia

random · 17/07/2009 22:30

Some of these names are no worse then the awful old lady and mens names I read on here imo

katiestar · 17/07/2009 22:29

But there's a difference .A commonly used name that you just don't like (fair play for not naming them )is one thing . But there are some made-up names on here that are just so breathtakingly awful that even the parent must know they are 'marmite ' names.

HerHonesty · 17/07/2009 22:27

but you are reading the thread "just for fun" right?

Boo

HerHonesty · 17/07/2009 22:21

sorry, candida, thrush, just to similar..

and also, yup, shiten might be japanese and perfectly normal in japan but here it is a swear word plus en. sorry but that really does makes it a bad name....

iona boyle.. poor bugger.

FAQinglovely · 17/07/2009 22:20

but it's hardly a positive thread title.

It's an invitation to rip the piss out of any name that you don't think is a normal name.

frazzledgirl · 17/07/2009 22:20

It was pronounced See-ob-han.

The mum had read it and liked the look of it, but hadn't made the link to Siobhan.

(and before anyone accuses me of being snobby, I honestly thought Hermione was pronounced Hemy-own, pre-Harry Potter...)
