My DS is Glyn, DH is Welsh, I am English. I think it's a solid, no-nonsense name which is easy to pronounce in England and also for our Spanish and Belgian relatives.
Always loved Iestyn but don't think it is as easily pronounced.

TiggyR · 07/07/2009 18:13

Shame!

Mammina · 07/07/2009 13:37

I agree with you tiggy but I can't use it as it's my nephew's name!

Now Evan is lovely. Not too common, (in either respect!)not boring, not hard to pronounce or spell, not too fashionable or 'of the moment' just a good solid, timeless, ageless, classless, but slightly unusual name, and still very Welsh. Perfect.

Mammina · 06/07/2009 19:50

Exactly, I just think of Richard Bryars... Arthur Thooelin Jenkins or whatever it was!

suwoo · 06/07/2009 19:32

Llewelyn is more 'known' though, due to old Lawrence. No bugger can ever say it though can they. You'd get Thew-elin or similar attempts.

Mammina · 06/07/2009 19:29

OMG Abakhan yes, brings back memories of trips with my nan!
Dysgu, Llewelyn too difficult I think, as is Meirionydd, & I can't use Rhys.

OP posts:
suwoo · 06/07/2009 17:16

You are thinking of the Abakhan Migola, which is 5 minutes away from Mostyn/Greenfield market.

Dysgu · 06/07/2009 17:15

I am on the Isle of Wight now. Used to live in Wrexham and originally from Ponterwyd (Aberystwyth).

One of my mum's brothers was Cynfelin. Other is Dewi.

I also like Evan.

I fave two daughters - and they have Italian names (DP's heritage).

Still like Gruffydd. Or Llewelyn? Merionydd? Rhys?

TiggyR · 06/07/2009 17:06

I've always liked Dewi, myself. The trouble with the others is the traditional spelling. Unless he spends most of his life in Wales it will be an absolute burden no matter how much you might want to keep it real!

Mammina · 06/07/2009 16:25

Suwoo no, a bit further down the road in Caernarfon, but have family around Llandudno

Dysgu I've never heard of Cynfelin...?
Is Mostyn market the place where they sell material?

OP posts:
Wilkiepedia · 06/07/2009 09:20

Osian Lefi lovely lovely lovely

ShowOfHands · 06/07/2009 09:15

I like all of them, except Mostyn. I have only ever heard it as a surname or in reference to Mostyn's, the curtain manufacturer.

suwoo · 06/07/2009 09:09

Ha, Mostyn market- thats a blast from the past! We used to go there when I was a teenager, I got a lot of chavvy clothes from there.

Where do you live Dysgu?

Dysgu · 05/07/2009 23:34

Mostyn makes me think of the market!

Cynfelin?

I think Osian would need 'explaining' too - but don't let that put you off using it as lots of names probably need explaining in London.

Mammina · 05/07/2009 23:21

For some unknown reason I was a bit worried that Mostyn maybe reminded me of a name you'd give a pet, then realised earlier that my friend used to have a cat called Mostyn.... hmm

OP posts:
cioccolato · 05/07/2009 16:42

Osian Lewis gets my vote =D

moondog · 05/07/2009 15:00

I've got an Aneirin.
Not hard for people to pronounce I find and I am out of Wales a lot.
If they do mispronounce it, I just put them right.

suwoo · 05/07/2009 12:30

How very astute Migola . Actually Colwyn Bay, but spent most of my teenage years hanging around in Llandudno. Moved away as soon as I could though .

Are you from that area too?

Kaylo · 05/07/2009 12:19

You have picked such lovely names - I really like Osian

and middle name I really like Lewis and Lefi, I like Iolo as well but it doesn't seem to 'ring' with Osian.

Ultimately it's up to you - with any of these names your baby will be very well named

rowingboat · 05/07/2009 12:13

Thanks Migola, I think Cerion is nice, but prefer Ossian. It has a nice artistic background as well.
I actually really like your middle name options as well, Iolo is gorgeous and Leffi and would make lovely first names too.

Mammina · 05/07/2009 12:12

are you from llandudno way by any chance suwoo?!
oh god it's so hard and such a big decision, I just don't know

OP posts:
suwoo · 05/07/2009 12:00

I am a welsh speaker and think Osian would need to be 'explained' a lot. I am not generally a fan of welsh names, but I do really like Osian.

My least favourite is Mostyn, because there are strong links to that name where I come from and there are pubs and streets are called that.

Mammina · 05/07/2009 11:40

Shucks thanks kaylo! Agree that Iolo doesn't go with Osian

Cerion is kerryon

Moondog dwi'n gwybod, that's what puts me off Osian, however it's obviously not common in London which is why I'm tempted to have it. I really like Mostyn but am worried it' a bit silly and a bit of a pet's name?

I love Ianto but a friend has recently used it.
Mrs Mattie you're probably thinking of Aneurin, which is nice but hard for non welsh to pronounce maybe, plus DH has vetoed anyway

OP posts:
MrsMattie · 05/07/2009 11:20

Never heard of any of them before.

I like Osian, although prefer the Irish Oisin.

I know a Welsh couple with a son who's name sounds like 'An-eye-ron' - don't know how they spell it. Always thoguht it was lovely.
