I am struggling to find a boys name that is the "one". I like unique names but also names that will grow with them, quite a difficult combo. I like the sound of Brakkai and Indio but would like to test them out before I actually name the baby. Any comments welcome.

Oh yeah, forgot about Thurmaston...oh well, as long as he's not called Ratby it can't be too bad

FairLadyRantALot · 03/07/2009 12:51

there is a village called Thurston in Suffolk... just googled

FairLadyRantALot · 03/07/2009 12:50

no, lol...it might be Thurmaston...but thurston still sounds like a placename

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/07/2009 12:49

Each Peach - what's a Prannock? Is it something like a pillock?

cyteen · 03/07/2009 12:48

Are you thinking of Thurnby Lodge, FairLady?

FairLadyRantALot · 03/07/2009 12:46

Thurston...well...if you live in Leicester...not agood idea...am sure there is a part of Leicester that is called somehting like that....certainly sounds like a part of town, ratehr than a name, lol!

How about Brannon...I know 1 little Brannon...and think it is a cool name

Other unusual names I can think of now:
Tariq
Pavel
Pasha
Sasha ( I prefer it as a boys name)
Roman
Jesse
Jonah
Noah ( my personal absolute favourite, but realise it is not that unusual)
Marvin
Mirco
Kaden
Christian

EachPeachPearMum · 03/07/2009 12:33

Getorf... Brannock is a little too close to 'prannock'....

Astrophe · 03/07/2009 12:31

I love the name Elmo...never met anyone called it. There was a Saint Elmo, so its not just for puppets.

smartacus · 03/07/2009 12:29

Barbidoux

cyteen · 03/07/2009 12:27

Branwell

GetOrfMoiLand · 03/07/2009 12:15

Brannock was also a Celtic (iirc) saint.

SuziDee · 03/07/2009 12:07

Hi

If you liked Bracken what about Breccon? Don't know if anyone has suggested apparently he was a saint?

harlok · 03/07/2009 11:58

lowrib completely agree with you there!
madamecastafiore as for hermione being usual it only sounds usual now thanks to the harry potter movies but 10 yrs ago it was unusual! i actually got it from the winters tale by shakespeare.

Well Septimus is my absolute favourite, but I'm NOT having seven!

lottiejenkins · 03/07/2009 11:21

As long as you dont call him Rayn....... I am still giggling at Lee Ryan from Blue calling his son Rayn... (He then carefully explained that Rayn was an anagram of Ryan!!)

lowrib · 03/07/2009 11:19

And regarding difficult-to-pronounce or spell names, you may not realise it but the sub-text here is that only English names are acceptable.

Lots of the names people complain are hard to pronounce or spell on these boards are Celtic. If they're not used they'll die out completely which is death of culture in action, and would be a great shame.

cyteen · 03/07/2009 11:16

EPPM, I love Thurston. We considered it for DS (Sonic Youth fans )

lowrib · 03/07/2009 11:14

"i do think it terribly selfish to want to name a child something SOOO unusual.

he will forever be repeating his name, having to spell it out and never fitting in.

unusual or rather uncommon name fine, totally unique? its just not fair."

Sorry but that's just not true.

I know lots of adults with unusual names - work colleagues have commented "do you actually now anyone with a normal name?!"

They ALL say they really like their unusual names.

It's much more common to have an unusual name these days anyway. Look at any inner-city primary school class register and you'll see traditional names are often in the minority!

whilst i can understand the desire to not have one of 14 tom's in a year group, i do think it terribly selfish to want to name a child something SOOO unusual.

he will forever be repeating his name, having to spell it out and never fitting in.

unusual or rather uncommon name fine, totally unique? its just not fair.

IMHO obviously

EachPeachPearMum · 03/07/2009 11:00

Torsten
Thurston
Arlo
Kester
Randall
Linus
Soren
Gordon
Duncan
Ivo
Quinlan
Quintus
Cosmo
ILAR
Oisin
Orion

I really don't like Brakkai, sorry, seems very harsh, and made up. Indio- the only one I can think of was the nasty bandito in a spaghetti western....
There are lots of nice unusual names out there though...

Disenchanted3 · 03/07/2009 10:54

Instead of Olo how about Otto?

Dont like the first 2 at all.
