Someone just told me this was on their shortlist. I love it, I want it...

Can't can I?

Not really.. I quite like the international Velvet associations, but know a couple of kids called Rocky and Velvet - their mother has put me off both names permanently…

Cressie2 · 26/11/2021 15:42

Noooooo, it’s trashy!

SleafordSods · 10/11/2021 07:39

I know of a little boy called Denim, and while I’m not usually keen on ‘out there’ names, he’s such a cool little fella he can totally carry it!

We have a Denim in the family although she's a woman, not a little boy Smile

brightwave · 10/11/2021 06:20

Somewhere out there theres a 12 year old Velvet Confused

It's a lovely name for a pet.
But terrible for a child. Sorry. Just my opinion and quite a few others

RestingStitchFace · 09/11/2021 18:38

Why not just call her Vulva or Fanny and be done with it?

scottishnames · 05/11/2021 11:43

According to a quick Google, Velven is a male composer from Bulgaria and/or a red non-alcoholic drink.
Velves is a Greek surname.

National Velvet is a strange and fascinating book (the film was nothing like it).
Interesting article here www.theguardian.com/books/2012/apr/06/national-velvet-enid-bagnold-rereading

Skeumorph · 04/11/2021 16:04

Cor, that's my first time getting sucked into a zombie thread! A thousand apologies.

SoupDragon · 04/11/2021 15:58

It IS an official name popular in the 60s

Which isn't far off when this thread was started it's so old....

JorisBonson · 04/11/2021 15:55

I knew a Velvet. In her 40's by now. Always hated the name and considered deed poll last I saw her.

ILoveShula · 04/11/2021 15:53

My two are Ripstop and Organdie

abloom11 · 04/11/2021 15:49

pagwatch · 29/06/2009 16:16

It is very porn star.

Alishanty · 29/06/2009 16:13

I really like it. Have seen National Velvet. At least Velvet is a luxurious not like nylon. I suggested it but dp didn't like it.

Frasersmum123 · 27/06/2009 18:16

Please God no, if you like the sound of it can you settle for Violet, or does it have to be fabric related?

nevergoogledragonbutter · 27/06/2009 16:24

Thanks thunderduck.

LadyOfWaffle · 27/06/2009 12:31

I like it - makes me think of National Velvet

thell · 27/06/2009 12:24

Roffle at Polly-Esther !

I quite like Calico...

Velvet not my cup of tea really - my personal tendency would be to use a more unusual or 'out-there' name as a middle name, so the child can use it if they're feeling confident enough to.

Indiechick · 27/06/2009 12:17

I know a 25 year old, she's an actress (well a drama teacher who auditions), it's a lovely name.
