Quentin or Hugo

Annabelsmummie · 24/06/2009 10:38

We're expecting a boy at the end of October and have managed to narrow our name choice down to our two current favourites: Quentin and Hugo.

Our dd is Annabel.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes proper posh adults in Britain are called Mike or Peter (never Pete) if a man and Susan or Bunny if they're female.

Swedes · 24/06/2009 15:11

I have a George, he is thoroughly decent, except for some of his line calls when he is playing tennis against his big brother.

makipuppy · 24/06/2009 13:54

Was he a good cleaner Fio?

I always think of Hugo Chavez - the portly but charismatic democratically-elected dictator with lavish spending habits. I met him once, he commanded quite a presence.

Also, the 'poshness' of Hugo is a bit outdated now, from a time when hardly anyone gave their kids unusual names so if you weren't called John or Peter, you were posh.

Apart from Algernon that is, he'll be forever posh.

peppapig3 · 24/06/2009 13:38

Really like Hugo! So what if it's posh
I know a v nice Quentin too and they both go with Annabel.

Hello, Hugo is our choice if we have a boy this time!
I think that the class connotations are no where near as rigid as they have been. Loads of people are now called Olivia/Amelia/Sophia which a few years ago were never in the popular lists...
Our DD is Hermione, so we hope that they go together.
We have more problems if it's another girl though...!!

RockinSockBunnies · 24/06/2009 13:22

Love both names! They're certainly upper-class but definitely not WAG in any sense.

Wittering · 24/06/2009 13:15

And there is always the lovely Quentin Blake as an association that might mean something for the children themselves.

bluebump · 24/06/2009 13:15

I love Hugo, DP wouldn't let me call DS that though as he thought it was too posh.

Just saw this thread and thought I'd add my (biased) opinion. My ds is Quentin and we still love the name! So far in school we've had only good experiences - he is very happy, very popular and likes having an unusual initial (Q) .

AitchTwoOh · 24/06/2009 13:10

top 300 or 400? that's technically unpopular, you do realise?

sophiesmummie · 24/06/2009 13:08

I think Quentin is relatively common in the US - certainly within the top 300-400 most popular baby names, so I doubt that Quentin Tarantino was bullied because of his name being 'unusual' or 'rare'.

Also, isn't Quentin Richardson a famous US basketball player?

AitchTwoOh · 24/06/2009 13:03

george really is a wonderful name, i think. so solid and decent.

Wittering · 24/06/2009 13:01

That would explain the later ear-slicing and samurai bloodfests I suppose.

AitchTwoOh · 24/06/2009 12:58

quentin tarantino was bullied at school, that i guarantee you.

makipuppy · 24/06/2009 12:56

Blyton's Uncle Quentin was not evil, just a little absent-minded and intolerant of dogs.

I love Hugo, and Hugs for a baby is so sweet

sophiesmummie · 24/06/2009 12:53

I love Quentin! I think it's one of those old man names (like Arthur, Stanley) that is becoming more popular again. I know 2 under five.

I would think the younger generation has never heard of Quentin Crisp. I think for them Quentin Tarantino is much more relevant.

Wittering · 24/06/2009 12:52

I kind of like Otto, really I do. But you'd need the monocle and the heel-clicking to go with it, no?

Swedes · 24/06/2009 12:46

If your surname is Hunt, definitely do not call him Mike.

ingles2 · 24/06/2009 12:42

neither... sorry.

pinkpetunia · 24/06/2009 12:41

Why not use a nice French or German name? Us Brits are really quite cosmoploitan now, and we can handle things like that.

Most of my dd's classmates have Native American Indian names so times have changed

There are such beautiful french names - I've always loved Xavier but it wouldn't have suited our very British surname.

Good luck.

Wittering · 24/06/2009 12:39

Quentin makes me think of the evil Uncle Quentin in Enid Blyton storie.

If it just made me think of Quentin Crisp as played by John Hurt it would be ok -- always assuming you wanted your son's life to be a challenge for him.

Aitch you are right about Wolf. Brilliant name. If I handn't opted for invisibilising names sfor my sons I'd have been tempted by Wolf.

Swedes · 24/06/2009 12:36

I wanted to call DS3 Otto (DP is halb German) but we chose something else in the end. Otto is gorgeous.

expatinscotland · 24/06/2009 12:34

Oh, either one is fine for a baby rabbit!
