Louis or Louie?

magbags · 10/06/2009 14:33

We are considering the boys name Louie.

I know that the traditional spelling is Louis but I've heard some discussion on previous threads about incorrect pronunciation of this (as in Loo-is) which I would find really annoying.

To avoid this issue we are considering using the more intuitive (imo) spelling of Louie, which is written as you would say it, Loo-ee.

Is this a legitemate alternative way to spell the name? Opinions please!

Louis. It is a french name. Do that.

tammytoby · 26/12/2018 17:07

Louie is now classified as the English variant of the French Louis.

It is actually the more popular spelling in the UK.

I have a Louie. He’s met a few Louie’s only one Louis. I worried about the spelling, but so many people thought it read Lewis that it made my mind up for me. Louie is now classified as the English variant of the French Louis. Oh and he says Louie with an E is obviously the best

We had a Louis at work who pronounced it Lewis.
Really annoyingly, I have to consciously think now to get the pronunciation right!

Weird zombie thread!!

I know a Louis and when I first met him (after only seeing his name written down), I automatically pronounced it "Loo-ee", as in the French word. His girlfriend corrected me and said no it's "loo-is" and it's still bugged me ever since, because I think if it's pronounced loo-is it should be spelled Lewis?!

My nephew is called Louis, and has never had a problem with it. It's a lovely name

Cookit · 15/12/2018 08:57

I am hoping that the mispronounciation oh Louis as Lewis will be fixed a bit by Prince Louis.

I would definitely go with Louis a million times over. Louie looks like a misspelling. It’s like spelling Daniel and Danyul or William as Willyum.

tammytoby · 15/12/2018 08:41

Louie is 100% a boys name. It was the more popular spelling last year. There were 1367 boys named Louie in 2017 (vs only 819 Louis') and that spelling is increasing in popularity.

The girls name is Louise!

Ok, decision made. If we go with this name (which I now think we will) we WILL spell is Louis!!! Thanks for all your help everyone.
