I like Mali, Maud, Manon and Mischa / Mica

thell · 28/06/2009 01:40

My Polish relatives use Misa (Misha) as a term of affection, like teddy bear. The Google translator says that mis (mish) can mean bear, which might be where it comes from.

I think it's a nice name, and you should go for it if you both really like it.

Love Saskia too, BTW

I know a Michaela who is called Mischa by friends, in Germany. It is quite a common nickname there, but slightly dated.

RubyLove1 · 25/06/2009 12:57

My sister is called Mesha (well actually Melisha, but no one calls her that) and it seems quite feminine to me. Think it goes with Saskia too as both those names are simple yet not too common. Not that having a common name should make a difference to what you want to call your own child

Love Mimi. Hate Mischa. Miranda would make a nice Mimi.

MamaLazarou · 20/06/2009 17:39

It just makes me think of that awful anorexic woman from the TV.

It's quite pretty though. And that awful anorexic woman won't be on the TV forever.

Misha is short for Mikhail, so it's like Mike. I think there might be some character that's a bear named "Misha," but I don't think the name means bear.

Sasha can be short for Alexander or Alexandra, so it's more unisex.

I think it means Bear in Russian
or maybe that is mishka

nooka · 11/06/2009 07:05

Ha ha, serves me right for pontificating really I expect I was thinking more of Sasha. Although Beyond the Name sites it as German as well. Has no (f) Mischa btw, just Misha as a diminutive of Mikhail.

I do have Russian relatives with lovely names, I just wouldn't expect to use them personally (I like my names to have English provenance, as sadly I have no interesting genes!).

sophiesmummie · 10/06/2009 21:39

You could name her Michaela and use Micha as a nickname.

SassyBo · 10/06/2009 21:34

Thanks for all your comments guys! 7 weeks to make up my mind, i seem to change daily as to what is my favorite name!!

I have taught 2 children names Mica (pronounced Meesha). One was actually Michaela but went by Mica at all times. Both children now teenagers. It was on our list.

Have taught two called Sasha/Sacha this year. Sasha is a girl. Sacha is the boy. No one in the school seems to have a problem with this.

Have also had 2 Caseys in my class - one boy and one girl. Again, no one had any problem with this. I think the name becomes the child rather than the other way round.

Love Saskia - was at school with one and did an exchange to Germany with one. (in late 1980s)

BarackObamasBigEars · 10/06/2009 21:09

That's like Mica Paris, Daisymoo.

DaisymooSteiner · 10/06/2009 19:05

I know a little girl called Mica (pronounced Mischa) and I think it's really pretty.

poppysweetie · 10/06/2009 18:55

I know a female Mischa, I like it, and I think it goes well with Saskia

ajandjjmum · 10/06/2009 14:01

I know a French female Misia.

MrsMerryHenry · 10/06/2009 13:56

VeryAnnieMary, "Kasia" is the correct spelling for 'Kasha' (which, in Polish, is the spelling of a grain a bit like buckwheat - random fact!).

I see there's a Russian thing going on in this thread...

I knew a Marischa (Dutch-origin schoolfriend) who shortened her name to Mish. Not sure whether the name was Dutch. Very lovely girl, though!

I went out with a (male) Mischa for three years. So I would not name my child that - and particularly not a girl!

SassyBo · 10/06/2009 10:21

Nooka---No,no salavic connections, but seens as Saskia is dutch that doesn't matter!
Thanks for everyones opinions, am a bit worried about the boy thing, maybe back to the drawing board i think. Choosing a name is stress!!!
