We thought of Caedmon for DS (he is said to be the 1st English poet) but chickened out and went for Aidan instead! It might reappear on a subsequent list though!

FairLadyRantALot · 07/06/2009 17:22

than not sure about Caedmon bit like Caveman)...but Oisin sounds fabulous

ThePhantomPlopper · 07/06/2009 09:34

Fergus - Don't like it, the Fergus I know is called Fungus.
Caedmon - OK
Finbarr - I like Finbarr and Finn.
Dougray - Don't like.
Harry - OK
Fraser - OK
Rory - Like Rory.
Oisin - OK.

yama · 07/06/2009 09:16

I love all of your names except Rory. I especially love Dougray and MaggieBee's suggestion of 'Doogie' for short.

What about Duncan?

moulesfrites · 07/06/2009 08:36

Caedmon is pronounced "cade - mon" with the emphasis on the first syllable - he was a Northumbrian saint.

Oisin pronouced "oh - sheen"

Harry- like

Fraser- quite like this one

Oisin - how is it pronounced

LaDiDaDi · 06/06/2009 18:57

I like Fergus, Dougray and Rory.

hughsieoxf · 06/06/2009 16:16

We have a Rory and a Finbar with one r in the family and I think they are both really cute!

TabithaTwitchet · 06/06/2009 14:22

I don't have any objective reasons why I don't like Rory (apart from not being able to pronounce R very well, so sounding stupid when I say it) Just really dislike the sound of it and look of it written down. Sorry . Lots and lots of names fall into this category for me.

MaggieBee · 06/06/2009 13:59

I read on MN that Rory is a 'chav' name. I was . Rory is a centuries old name from Irish folklore, and a few people may have decided that it's chavy, but it's couldn't ever be a chav name. If chav people use it, they had a moment of good taste!!

Meglet · 06/06/2009 13:58

i like Fergus. it was on my list, but dc2 was a girl so i never got to use it.

also like Hector.

MaggieBee · 06/06/2009 13:56

MouleFrites, You don't need Irish connections imo. The British Isles is a tiny part of the greater World geographically speaking. I would have used Olwen as I loved it. I would have used Fergus. Welsh/Scottish. I am Irish. ACtually my children have English names and I never thought we shouldn't use English names! (although, different I know because we speak English).

MaggieBee · 06/06/2009 13:51

Fergus - love it.
Caedmon - not keen.
Finbarr - quite like this one. I also like Finbar and Fintan.. I would spell it with one r though 'Finbar'. In Ireland some Barrys are actually Finbars.
Dougray - Like it. But I like Douglas (love Doogie, very cool) too. Gray a nice nn. Would work for Gregor too.
Harry - ok but boring next to your other choices.
Fraser - quite like it. I also like Spencer!
Rory - I love this. Love Ruardhi (rooory) and I like Diarmuid (as in Gavin) as well.
Oisin - I like this. Too many in Ireland now, but if you're not in Ireland, go for it.

I love Bruce, Hamish, Hector and Donald if you're looking for McCool.

moulesfrites · 06/06/2009 13:46

why can you not stand Rory tabitha?

OP posts:
Castiel · 06/06/2009 13:17

I like all of them. Harry far too popular though, they're ten a penny.

One r for Finbar though imho and I think for Oisin in particular you need the Irish connection

Nancy66 · 06/06/2009 13:15

Fergus - not keen, beardy old gits name
Caedmon - awful.
Finbarr - makes me think of Viz character but like Finn
Dougray - ugly sounding
Harry - great name but very popular
Faser - all right
Oisin - awful.

TabithaTwitchet · 06/06/2009 13:06

I love Dougray. Not particularly keen on any of the others, but they are all OK. Except Rory, which I absolutely can't stand.

MrsMattie · 06/06/2009 12:28

Hmmm. It's a personal choice. I would find it odd to meet an Oisin who didn't have Irish roots, but then, my DH is black British with Caribbean roots and so 'our' Oisin would have been a strapping great mixed race boy ...(our Oisin was a girl in the end!).

moulesfrites · 06/06/2009 12:26

Do you think we need some kind of Celtic connections to use some of these names to make them seem authentic? Not Irish, but have Scottish roots.

jellybeans · 06/06/2009 10:31

Fergus NOT KEEN
Caedmon NOT KEEN
Finbarr NOT KEEN BUT FINN IS NICE
Dougray DISLIKE
Harry LOVE IT
Fraser DISLIKE
Rory LIKE
Oisin LIKE

My fave is Harry.

MrsMattie · 06/06/2009 10:13

Oisin is my favourite boy's name in the whole world. I absolutely love it. Are you Irish? It is a very strong Gaelic name. How would you pronounce it? there are various ways - Uh-sheen, Osh-een, Oh-sheen (my personal fave)

I like Finbar, but with the one 'r'.

Not keen on the others.
