Jorja/Jorga

My friend who is due to give birth to a little girl very soon, has asked my honest opinion on the choice of name.

She wants to call her Georgia, but spell it one of the above ways. I did tell her I wasn't keen on these, think it's a lovely name but should be spelt "Georgia".

She seemed quite offended, , and thinks the "Georgia" spelling is to conventional. Any opinions? Didn't want to upset her, was just stating a fact!

Don't worry, Yank, that's what I thought you meant too

wotulookinat · 20/05/2009 12:19

In my mind it is spelt Georgia, and spelling it another way screams of trying too hard to be different. Poor kid would spend her whole life having to spell out her name.

YanknCock · 20/05/2009 12:17

'Just because there is an actress with the same name spelling doesn't mean it is the way to go.'

Little disclaimer here, my only purpose in pointing out that it was the name of an actress was to show that the mum in question hadn't 'made it up' (as was said a few times) and that the name had been in existence for over 40 years.

Despite my thinking it's kinda okay, I probably wouldn't use it due to the spelling thing, and I'm a fan of more 'traditional' names!

sockmonster · 20/05/2009 11:11

someguy sums it up brilliantly. I'd pronounce this hor-ha, like jorge! If she wants a girl named Georgia, she really needs to call her Georgia. It's a lovely name.

SomeGuy · 20/05/2009 10:53

utterly chavtastic

MadameCastafiore · 20/05/2009 10:52

Is she German or Swedish or something? (Mind you even then it would be pronounced Yorja which is just as vile! Because if she isn't I would think she was thick or common or both to be honest, why would anyone want to make up their own spelling of a name?

Next we will have Jain or Elizabef or something equally hideous!

Astrophe · 20/05/2009 10:50

You were right to tell your friend the truth! I agree - Jorja I would pronounce "Yorja", and Jorga I would pronounce "Jor-gah" - with a hard 'g'. And they both look awful when writen down, whereas Georgia looks nice.

oodlesofpoodles · 20/05/2009 10:49

X posts spenthen. Its hispanic but maybe european too.

oodlesofpoodles · 20/05/2009 10:48

I thought Jorga was pronounced with an H like Hor Ha, like Jorge.

DesperateHousewifeToo · 20/05/2009 10:46

AstonMartini - I'm with you .

Just because there is an actress with the same name spelling doesn't mean it is the way to go. There are plenty of actors'/actress' names I wouldn't dream of copying, lol.

pottycock · 20/05/2009 10:44

Both of those spellings are horrendous - has she suffered a blow to the head at all..?

Weegiemum · 20/05/2009 10:40

Teachers have a great laugh in the staffroom over spelling like these, I can testify .......

spenthen · 20/05/2009 10:28

I know someone who knows a little Jorja and assumed that she was Eastern European when she first saw her name written down - thought it was pronounced "Hor-ha" or something.

Yes, it does cause confusion.

AstonMartini · 20/05/2009 09:37

Agree with Huff too.

I would also assume the parents couldn't spell (and that they were, um, how to put this nicely ... actually, I don't think I can put it nicely, so I shall leave it at that!)

Paolosgirl · 20/05/2009 09:34

Agree with Huff.

Why do people do this? If you want an unusual name, fine, but giving your child a popular name and then misspelling it just makes you look like you can't spell, and condemns the child to a lifetime of having to 'correct people and spell out their name.

Sorry, rant over. It's one of my pet hates . I guess it's her (hormonal) call...

HuffwardlyRudge · 20/05/2009 09:29

I would assume Jorga was pronounced Yorga with a hard G, like smorgasbord.

YanknCock · 20/05/2009 09:22

'I've always assumed that Jorja Fox was named Georgia (or Betty or Janet or ...) and that Jorja is just an, ahem, interesting stage name.'

Nope, her birth name was Jorja-An and on some things she did she was credited as Jorjan (misspelling or on purpose, I don't know). Her parents were from Montreal so maybe it's a more common spelling there?

Plonker · 19/05/2009 23:36

I much prefer Georgia

But hey, it's her call ...

FrankMustard · 19/05/2009 23:26

prefer it spelt Georgia

wilkos · 19/05/2009 23:25

people will assume they can't spell if they name their child jorja

well, I will

she has gone loopy you must stop her

lechatnoir · 19/05/2009 23:15

Looks like a made-up version of Georgia to me & seriously naff unless their surname is exotic enough to carry it off!
I too think Georgia is a lovely name BTW just don't see why you'd want to mess with it - if it's too conventional go for something else!!

Ronaldinhio · 19/05/2009 23:13

the pregnancy hormones have driven her mad

seek help for her

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 19/05/2009 23:12

I agree it should be G-e-o-r-g-i-a. I've always assumed that Jorja Fox was named Georgia (or Betty or Janet or ...) and that Jorja is just an, ahem, interesting stage name.
