Changing DD's name at 11 months - changed once already - help me decide PLEASE!

Mumsnet jury - please help me decide!

After much deliberation, we decided to call DD2 Charlotte from me being about 38 weeks. Went into labour telling the midwife "she's going to be called Charlotte, don't let me change my mind!" (as I do this)

When she was a few weeks old I went through much angst, decided she didn't look like a Charlotte Elisabeth - loads of Charlottes around, didn't feel like a little girl's name etc etc. Left it till the last minute, but finally registered her as Evelyn Charlotte. We love the name Eve, but have a short surname so it sounds daft - hence registering her as Evelyn, wasn't wild on the full name but thought I would grow to love it.

Now she is 11 months and I'm ashamed to say I really don't like it. I've tried everything. Doctors pronounce it as Ever-lyn (we call it Eeev-lyn). DP nicknames her Evil-kenevil or just plain Evil, it drives me mad. I feel like we've really let her down. (DP never liked Evelyn but went along with it to keep me happy)

Now we've finally admitted neither of us likes Evelyn, we are debating whether to change her name to Charlotte Eve, but call her Eve. DP is keen on this and so am I, but we are both concerned that this will be confusing for DD2 - particularly at school etc. DD1 is nearly 3 and got confused enough when we changed it from Charlotte the first time. I love Charlotte + our second name, but do think she looks more like an Eve, but think her full name would be better for school etc. Eve + our second name doesn't sound great.

Sorry to ramble - please Mumsnet jury.. help us decide!

Charlotte Eve sounds a bit like Christmas Eve

like

Sunday Rose sounds like Sunday Roast

Just call her Eve it's beautiful, it's ALREADY HER NAME and she knows it now!

LilianGish · 26/05/2009 19:28

Don't change her name - it's gorgeous. Just call her Eve. I know an Ella who is really Emanuella, but neither parent (or anyone else) ever calls her that.

wonderingwondering · 26/05/2009 19:24

We used Evelyn as a middle name, we really liked it, I think it is a classic name. And Eve is elegant, and Evie or Eva sweet for a little girl. I'm really against using shortened names on birth certs - just my bugbear - people do need to have a 'formal' name for work, adult life, and I think Evelyn is a lovely one, and you can always use the shorter version yourselves.

Everyone has the wibbles about the name they choose at some point!

simplesusan · 26/05/2009 19:16

Eviz I can sympathise with you.
I too loved the name Evelyn but was unsure 1) how to pronounce it
2) how to spell it is it Evelyn or Eveline are they even the same name?
3) Probably preg hormones but convinced myself that it might be a boys name at one stage!
Also loved the name Eve but wanted a longer name.
Anyhow I do think you should stick with Evelyn but call her Eve as it is a resonable nn of Evelyn. She will then have the choice of calling herself Eve or Evelyn when she is older.

DH's parents are both known by their middle
names since children and this have not been a problem for them. I think it would be fine.

oandemum · 25/05/2009 21:14

i am biased, my dd is called eve. we love it, its a no nonsense name which no one ever changes, and i think it is beautiful and timeless. go for it xx

spenthen · 22/05/2009 16:32

Late entrant here but my DH is known by his middle name and we regularly curse his parents for their thoughtlessness - every official thing comes through in the "wrong" name, when he makes appointments with doctors, dentists, etc. we have to remember to use the official first name, going for interviews is awkward (the first thing he always has to say to the interviewer is to correct him/her about his Christian name - hardly a great first impression).

You will be making her life so much easier if you give her the first name which you intend to use as her first name!!

And for what it's worth I think Evelyn is gorgeous, and perfectly logically shortened to Eve. And she might thank you for having extra options when she's older.

Now off you go and enjoy your daughter.

wolfear · 21/05/2009 22:08

Just call her Eve.

LittleMissWorryHead · 21/05/2009 19:24

Oh you poor thing!!

OK. So you want baby to be Eve. You both like Eve and see her as Eve?

Change her name. Just change it. Done. Dusted. Unless Eve sounds TOTALLY ridiculous with your surname then just change it.

Nobody else is going to overthink it like you (and all parents I mean) so nobody will notice or care about a short name and short surname.

And about confusing DD1 - Eve is short for Evelyn so you're not really changing her name iyswim. Just choosing the short version.

Call and get the forms, it takes about a week to get it done - then you have set the ball rolling but dont' have to do it officially if you don't want to.
I changed my sons middle name a month ago - best decision i ever made. If you're not happy now then you MUST change it.

Have you been calling her Evelyn all this time or Eve?

Ozziegirly · 20/05/2009 08:09

My real name is Victoria but I was always Vicky through school and with everyone else basically including my parents.

But I am now Victoria at work as it's easier to say on the phone (to avoid "Nicky?" No, Vicky. V I C K Y, yes with a Y, not an I" every single day.

Although since I have moved to Australia I appear to be Vic.

Stick with Eve, it's a great name.

cupofteaplease · 19/05/2009 20:30

Stick with her name, Evelyn Charlotte, and just call her Eve. No need to change anything officially. I think it would be rather strange to change her name yet again, especially as your alternative is really no different from what you already have! If you were scrapping the Eve part for Suzannah or something, then maybe I would understand.

BTW my dd is called Evie and I feel it is a name in its own right. Never call her evil though- think that's a bit off for your dh to do that to his own dd.

Danceaway · 19/05/2009 20:13

Eve Lom anyone? (I think she's famous beauty guru). Please stick with Eve, your dd will be v confused otherwise and what if you get cold feet about Lucia when she's 2...?
Agree DP shouldn't do Evil jokes although funny. Know lots of Eve's, and Evie's, and this never occured to me. You can do anything with any name. Let your dd decide when she's old enough what she wants to be known as.

Podrick · 19/05/2009 20:05

Evangeline is a great name

drowninginclutter · 19/05/2009 19:52

Keep it as it is on the birth cert but just call her Eve. Lovely name and I'd second (or third or whatever) that loads of people are just known by the shortened version of their name.

weepootle · 19/05/2009 19:51

I would change it to Eve, I don't like Evelyn either.

helsbels4 · 19/05/2009 17:55

My mil and her sister both use their middle names because they prefered them to their real names and I also know a family who call their four children variations of their proper names - day in and day out.
I would personally stick with Evelyn (unless you really hate it) and just call her and let her always be known as Eve, Evie, Eva - whatever you prefer!

SoupDragon · 19/05/2009 17:43

Just call her Eve and use that everywhere.

MrsMattie · 19/05/2009 17:38

If you like Eve, call her Eve. No brainer.

hippipotamiHasLost29Pounds · 19/05/2009 17:27

I love love love the name Evelyn (I would pronounce it ev-eh-lyn)
I would keep it as Evelyn Charlotte and just call her Eve. When she is older she can tell others her name is Eve or Evelyn or any variation thereof.
But don't change it again, just shorten Evelyn to Eve and be happy

And just in case you feel she has to be officially renamed Eve - why? Think of all the Samuels known as Sam, Thomas's known as Tom, Eleanors knows as Ellie, Henrietta's knows as Hettie.

jellybeans · 19/05/2009 17:22

I like all the suggested names but I would suggest change to Eve or Eva Charlotte. I prefer Eve to Charlotte and it's less confusing this way. She can go by middle name if she wants anyway when older. My gran is Evelyn pronounced Eve lyn.

claireybee · 19/05/2009 17:20

Just call her Eve, no need to change. At the dr's etc you can say 'known as Eve' and that'll be the name they call. We've done it with ds because he is known by his middle name

lynniep · 19/05/2009 17:15

I rather like Evelyn, although thats my step-mums real name, and she hated it so much she's been called by her middle name for the last 60 years!

Bobblebuddy · 19/05/2009 11:52

I take back what I said earlier, that you should change it officially. I neglected to remember that your DD is nearly 1.

I agree with other posters - if you like Eve or Evie etc, go with that, and keep Evelyn as the full name. It is a lovely name and if your dd already recognises her name, it might be disruptive to start calling her something entirely different at this stage.

Kate - for example - is almost always short for Catherine (whatever spelling) but most kates i know never use their full name.

Eve or Evie is gorge, and agree with the Eve Smith = rock star (or whatever your short surname is - it should work fine). But tell your DP to stop with the 'Evil' nn as that is just plain unfair to your dd .

thehairybabysmum · 19/05/2009 11:51

So if you want to call her Eve then dont change to charlotte...that makes no sense at all.

I know an evelyn who is Evy (pronounced as Ev-vie, like heavy) and thats lovely.

It does sound like you dont like charlotte any more than evelyn so dont switch to that.

I think youjust need to use Eve all the time and stop thinking about it!

scarletlilybug · 19/05/2009 11:36

My friend has an "Evelyn" - always known as "Eve". Don't worry about changing it on the birth certificate.

I don't know what yiour surname is but, tbh, I don't think a single-syllable forename and surname necessarily sounds bad - actually, it can sound quite cool - e.g. Kate Moss,
James Dean.
