I like Shelby for a girl, what do you think of it?

Sorry not for me either - makes me think of dodgy American singers (Shelby Lynne, Shania Twain etc). (talking of dodgy American names, when I was little I called my, er, imaginary dog Randy. My parents said absolutely no way and wouldn't tell me why!!)

BumShuffler · 16/05/2009 16:53

Shell suit instantly springs to mind, so that's a big no from me!

pooka · 16/05/2009 14:14

I'm sure there was a cartoon turtle/tortoise called shelby.

Don't like it.

shubiedoo · 16/05/2009 14:11

I knew one little girl called Shelby, it suited her. Wouldn't be my choice but it's fine!

passmethegin · 16/05/2009 14:06

No, no, no, don't do it.

numal · 16/05/2009 14:03

So many beautiful names, please don't choose Shelby.

piscesmoon · 16/05/2009 07:14

Dreadful.

MrsKitty · 16/05/2009 06:45

AWFUL - sorry!

Paolosgirl · 15/05/2009 19:55

No no no - American trailer trash.

missmiss · 15/05/2009 19:53

No. I knew an uber-chav called Shelby. Croydon facelift, 'gold' hoop earrings, brown lip liner, nasty accent.

MintyyAeroEgg · 15/05/2009 19:37

I quite like it actually.

I have met one Shelby. She is probably about 40 now. She got v pissed at my friend's fancy dress party and puked red wine puke in the bedroom where all the coats were piled up on the bed so I was not very pleased with her at the time.

But I like the name.

madwomanintheattic · 15/05/2009 19:29

i know it's not the same name, but i keep picturing the 'sheldon' scene in when harry met sally...

no.no.no.

RedCharityBonney · 15/05/2009 19:26

More of a Netto name maybe?

Not keen.

posieparker · 15/05/2009 19:26

I love the 'Asda' Name bit..... or as would be said in Bristol Asdle.

dizzydixies · 15/05/2009 19:20

not keen

MadameCastafiore · 15/05/2009 19:00

Ooohhhh no I have to say it with a really screechy sarf london accent!

Is one of those names that I would cringe at if you shouted it out in Waitrose - actually it is an Asda name or maybe Morrisons and that isn't good!

posieparker · 15/05/2009 18:50

Nope. I can only say it with a deep s'u'then drawl.

clairebear88 · 15/05/2009 18:49

This was my fave name when I was little and used to name all my dolls either Shelby or Christy. My taste in names has changed quite a bit but there will always be a place in my heart

violethill · 13/05/2009 00:38

It sounds like a plastic doll that cries and wees itself when you turn it upside down and bash it on the head

KingCanuteIAm · 12/05/2009 23:51

From Behind The Name "Though previously in use as a rare masculine name, it was popularized as a feminine name by the main character in the movie 'The Woman in Red' (1935). It was later reinforced by the movie 'Steel Magnolias' (1989) in which Julia Roberts played a character by this name"

Maybe not centuries of history but certainly some.

seeker · 12/05/2009 23:45

As far as I know it has no context, no history and no meaning. It's just a collection of letters. Why not Wilby? Or Canby, Wontby, Cantby.......

lunamoon2 · 12/05/2009 23:31

I know a Shelby and the name suits her. Not something I would choose but if you like it then go for it.
