There's a character in Skins called Effie. Her character is very pretty and a nutter rebellious, just to warn you, I suspect that this name will naturally become very attractive to many people, even if only at a subconscious level so you might not be the only one liking this name!

Short for Hephzibah.

Niknak21 · 15/05/2009 05:14

Eppie short for epilepsy?? sorry to bring down the tone

nooka · 15/05/2009 04:12

I prefer Eppie. But really just because of Silas Marner ("Eppie in the cole hole" anyone? )

I can't say that Euphemia does anything very positive for me.

mummy2b85 · 15/05/2009 02:56

think its short for josephine

ExtraFancy · 14/05/2009 20:34

I knew a Fiona whose nickname was Effie.

My nan wanted my mum to give me Euphemia as a middle name...my mum went for the slightly more pedestrian 'Kim'

wolfear · 14/05/2009 20:32

I know an Effie, she's Greek, it's her full name.

MayorNaze · 14/05/2009 20:25

WinkyWinkola · 14/05/2009 20:22

PuppyMonkey · 14/05/2009 20:18

Effie is short for Nora?????

dizzydixies · 14/05/2009 20:15

I would spell it Heffalump though otherwise the wee soul will have to correct the spelling her whole life

stillenacht · 14/05/2009 20:12

PestoMonster · 14/05/2009 20:11

PestoMonster · 14/05/2009 09:58

Effalump

thelollipoplady · 14/05/2009 09:58

Ophelia (effie-lia)

monkeycat · 14/05/2009 09:41

My Gran was called Euphemia - she was known as Famie , which I really like .

This was on my list for DD but DH hated it !

At my Gran's funeral the minister kept referring to her as Effie - oops .

macmam · 13/05/2009 17:08

Aoife isn't the gaelic of Effie--Oighrig is. Aoife is an Irish name some people use for Eva....Have an Auntie Oighrig/Effie (Euphemia). She hates it.

dizzydixies · 13/05/2009 17:05

I know a woman who has a DD called Stephanie known as Effie

Bathsheba · 13/05/2009 17:01

My best friend as a teenages we always called Effie or Ef by me - her name was Jennifer...

Nyx · 13/05/2009 13:51

LOL @ VeryAnnieMary - I never thought of that, and my own initials are LC, resulting in the nickname Elsie when I was at school. I didn't like it then but don't mind it now - typically, nobody would think of calling me that now.

VeryAnnieMary · 13/05/2009 12:43

Or a full name F- E-? Felicity Emma or somesuch? (clearly cannot think of names beginning with F)

VeryAnnieMary · 13/05/2009 12:42

Could you use Evelina? (great novel)

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 13/05/2009 10:52

I always thought Aioffe was pronunced A-off-e. Though I've never met anyone with that name.

My Great Aunt was an Effie but I have no idea what her proper name was. We nearly called DD Effie.

EffieGadsby · 13/05/2009 10:30

My Effie is merely a feminisation of Ephraim, but it seems Euphemia is the norm. Mum23monkeys, that's very interesting that Aoiffe is pronounced 'Effie' in Scotland; in my silly sassanach way, I had pronounced Aoiffe a bit like 'Eva' (but with 'f' rather than 'v' noises). Am very pleased to have learned better.
