The only names I really take issue with are those with apostrophes/ hyphens/ phonetically spelled.

Anything else is a live and let live scenario in my book. Some names I like more than others, even though there are relatively few names I would consider for a child of mine. I have 'rules' - no family/ friends names, no alliteration, no rude spelling initials etc etc etc.

what's wrong with Oscar cory? It's a very old and traditional name and has been through many phases of being popular.

[neither of mine is called Oscar btw, just don't understand what's wrong with it]

lunamoon2 · 02/05/2009 12:32

I think Jane is a perfectly acceptable name Cory, I can see it making a come back in a few years.
btw most Janes that I know are definaely not "plain" as the saying goes.
Ps It si not my name

cory · 01/05/2009 08:40

Around here I think you'd be more likely to be teased for Jane or Honor than for Honey. Grace is very common, along with some other virtue names. But Jane??? For this generation, that really would take a bit of living down.

I think there are different sides to this:

what middle-aged mumsnetters think is a sensible ordinary name

what is actually likely to raise eyebrows in a classroom full of children

of course names are continually crossing and re-crossing the boundaries

I was very saddened the day Oscar made it across the line: to me, this is not a sensible ordinary name and never will be

but I have to admit, it's unlikely to get you teased in the playground

for the record, I don't like Honey, Honor or Jane

I know of an older Grace who is anything but graceful. Also know a very moussey
coloured Ebony and a fair few non-ginger Ambers!

rofling at Poopy

As for Honey, I quite like it (actually I know siblings called Honey and Poppy ) and well, it sounds certainly much much nicer then Honor...is that even a name

Gentle · 27/04/2009 17:58

So sorry Leannabanana. Take care of yourself.

Leannabanana · 27/04/2009 17:46

Sadly the little mite i was am carrying won't need a name, Honey or otherwise, as my twelve week scan this morning showed it died two weeks ago. Going in thurs for an evacuation.

going to retire from MN for a bit.

Best of luck to everyone else expecting. xx

RachieB · 27/04/2009 16:03

I like Hope and Grace, but not really keen on any of the other virtue names

Was at a theme park the other day..... and a very large, dumpy teenage girl called Grace, and I thought oh what a shame,
pretty name, but she was anything but Grace(ful) !!

1dilemma · 27/04/2009 13:15

Poopy is the best typo!!!

And it rocks as a name

MsMargotBeauregarde · 27/04/2009 13:10

I like Joy too because I think that it doesn't carry any baggage with it. Well, everybody wants to be happy don't they?? I suppose a few people do struggle with it!!

"generallycontent" isn't so pretty.

Oh bugger, spelling mistakes galore in the post. My apologies.

lolianja · 26/04/2009 23:23

Whoever it was that said that our children wil be growing up in classrooms filed with Honeys and Snowdrops - utter crap! Have a gander at the most commonly used baby name lists over the last 10 years - it's all Thomas, Matthew, Oliver, James, Jack, Lucy, Emily, Hannah, Emma, Isabel etc etc. Honeys and Snowdrops may be more prevalent than they once were, but they're still in a tiny minority.

Colinfirth · 26/04/2009 23:18

Stool, stool, just another of those cutsie girly names that are all over. I mean what if she wants to be High Court judge?

seeker · 26/04/2009 23:06

Lockets - did I mention that I am,in fact, an elephant?

Not sure about Faeces - sounds a bit old fashioned. What about Stool - Jobbie to his friends?

Colinfirth · 26/04/2009 22:57

I just want to say that the name poopy is a disgrace and would suggest that those thinking of this name at least have the decency to put "faeces" on the birth certificate...

I think virtue names are a burden too - but bizarrely I have a Grace.(she's 13 - it was very unusual then!) and I didn't think of it as a virtue name [thick emoticon]. I discovered much later that some very devout Christians in our circle of friends thought that she was called Grace because, as we were what is euphemistically called "older parents", they assumed that we had been trying to conceive her for ages and were giving thanks with her name! They were obviously unaware of a) our faith-status and b) the fact that we said one evening "Oh, it might be nice to have a baby" and 9 months late there she was!
