how important are intials when naming your baby?

I'm about to have a baby girl. It's been really hard choosing a name and the name we'd really love to call her will give her the initials MAN.

Do you think this is a reason not to use this name? Or do you think it doesn't matter that much?

Opinions please!

the dd's are AM and FM

it wasn't planned lol.

i spent most of my formative years being called 'the hairy monster' as i happened to have the same initials as the (is he dead? late?) great dave lee travis...

sometimes you can't win.

Hi

My maiden name gave me the initials SAL then first marriage I became SAG - I quickly dropped the A, my proper and happy marriage has given me SAT. Although I feel sorry for hubby as his initials are MPT even dropping the P makes not much difference.

I have to say though we will not be calling our little boy anything like Thomas Ian etc.

I knew a kid who ended up with JAM - quite cool. I did have a logon at work that was supposed to be my initials but you had to have 3 and I don't have a middle name - so they just whacked an X in the middle. Dh was called Bagman at work because the IT dude just stuck an A in (dh does have a middle name, but IT dude was just too cool to ask).

So yes people are aware of it - having said that MAN is okay. Any chance of an extra couple of names so she could be WOMAN?

Sophelia · 25/04/2009 05:14

MAN is not too bad.
I had a friend at school who was SLAG.
Not good.

charlotteolivia · 25/04/2009 01:29

mine are COD! Although my parents did like Georgia as a first name...

LastOrders · 25/04/2009 00:25

On my list of baby names for girls was Bo Grace.

It would've been BoG. I couldn't do that to my child!

I had a boy, so never got to use Bo!

LissyGlitter · 25/04/2009 00:13

Our dd has the initials MCID and we chose it because it will make a good rapper name for her (OK, that wasn't the main reason, but it was the reason for the arrangemet of the middle names!)

Stinkyfeet · 24/04/2009 23:32

Oh no, I'm guessing if she doesn't get it, it would not be appropriate to explain! Hilarious about the number plate though!

nancy75 · 24/04/2009 23:27

my mum doesnt get it, when i was about 18 she saw a personalised number plate for sale that was something like nob 123 or whatever, and seriously asked if i would like it for my car - wtf?!

nancy75 · 24/04/2009 23:26

MamaG · 24/04/2009 23:26

RustyBear · 24/04/2009 23:25

My uncle is ASS.
I do think that one should have been avoided. MAN is fine though.

Stinkyfeet · 24/04/2009 23:24

Shit, that's bad nancy ! Is that by birth or marriage?

nancy75 · 24/04/2009 23:23

my initials are NOB
go on, laugh, you know you want to

MamaG · 24/04/2009 23:23

MAN is fine

My mum is PMS

RustyBear · 24/04/2009 23:21

My parents nearly gave me a middle name beginning with A - one of the reasons they didn't in the end was that it would give me the initials JAM.
If they had, when I married, I would have become a JAR....

Stinkyfeet · 24/04/2009 23:14

I got an extra middle name so my initials wouldn't be HAG!

Concordia · 24/04/2009 23:12

our dd has got INK
i worry about it a bit but i don't think it's that crucial. like people say, provided it isn't rude i think you're ok.

nightnightmoon · 22/04/2009 11:19

thanks, this is very reassuring.

the reason i got thinking about it is that people have pointed it out in a negative way when i discuss possible names... but i guess that in everyday life it might not come up so much.

It's fine. I know a bloke whose surname is Penison and the first five letters on his driving licence gave us cause for a teenage snigger. Not much he can do about that but will give a copper a gift if he's ever stopped.
