Edith?

Shortened to Edie...is it lovely or old lady-ish? I can't decide. Dh loves it but I have an ancient auntie Edie (distant enough not to be a problem either way) and I think it might be putting me off

It's such a lovely name , and contrary to received MN wisdom, is not that popular.

I know one and know of another under about 30 (apart from the Radio 1 DJ).

And I know a lot of children.

jellybeans · 24/04/2009 22:53

Too old lady for me.

TsarChasm · 23/04/2009 11:12

Edie isn't too bad. Edith could be revived I guess. I'm not too sure.

It's a little to close to Ethel maybe.

I imagine an Edith to be a 'thoroughly good sort' in a Mallory Towers book.

Tortington · 23/04/2009 11:09

larvely

pandavark · 23/04/2009 11:08

it's a good name. its not old ladyish

tartetatin · 23/04/2009 10:22

Edith is my middle name and I grew up hating it and found it incredibly embarrassing. However, times have changed and it is now quite fashionable again.

screamingabdab · 23/04/2009 09:53

Love Edie, not so sure about Edith. I can understand why you might want to have the longer name on Birth Certificate though, so go for it if you don't mind Edith.

ravenAK · 22/04/2009 19:35

Love it. Extremely cool.

Would've been a contender for dds but dh is Edward & ds Edmund...

LetThemEatCake · 22/04/2009 19:32

really don't like Edie or Edith. Or Elsie, come to think of it.

RachieB · 22/04/2009 19:19

Elsie is better than Edith or Enid IMO

sleepyhead3 · 22/04/2009 19:19

Edie is quite sweet as a nn.

pointydog · 22/04/2009 19:15

I like Edie and I like the sound of Edith, although it doesn't have great connotations.

OAPmum · 22/04/2009 19:00

One of those names which will no doubt have a come back - like Doris and we will all get used to it. It was my mother's name - Edith Annie known as Nan or Nancy

SK1980 · 13/04/2009 00:18

Love it - I also love Elsie and Enid! :-)

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 12/04/2009 22:30

I love it. Not keen on Iris, very harsh, but I do love Edith. Old lady yes, but it's a pretty and elegant sound. I like Edie too, just please not Eden. STripper/lap dancer/pole dancer's fake name.

piscesmoon · 12/04/2009 22:28

Old ladyish. It is better than some of that era, but I don't like the era in general.

pranma · 12/04/2009 22:21

I know a gorgeous Swiss Edith[25]who pronounces it 'Ay-deet'

hester · 11/04/2009 23:43

Love it. I know a 7-year-old Edith/Edie, and she loves it too.

My Nan is Edith and I never imagined her name would become popular again but I love it for little girls now.

If you want a laugh, my Nan went through a spell of pretending that she was called Elaine as she thought it was a more modern name

lovelybones · 11/04/2009 23:12

love Edie, I also had an Auntie Edie who was a real character so its a thumbs up from me

Bubbaloo · 11/04/2009 23:00

I know a 1 year old Edith and the name really suits her.

rachels103 · 11/04/2009 13:34

11 to 1 in favour...looks like dh is winning at the moment!
