I know they both sound a little 'fusty' to some people, but I thought it was definitely going to be Ernest - now quite like Albert!!!
What is the general feel?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
peanutbutterkid · 10/04/2009 15:23

I like them both, alibaba.
Okay, I wouldn't choose them myself, but I wouldn't blanche if I heard them, either. I'd think, "What interesting parents that child must have to choose original and not toffy names like that!"

Podrick · 10/04/2009 15:19

I think Ernest is fab

notagrannyyet · 10/04/2009 15:18

I wouldn't choose either as a first name. I did think about Albert once for a middle name. It was one of a number of family names we considered.

Can't imagine calling a new born Ernest. Think it might get the same reaction when it's 'called out' at the dentist as the name Herbert got in our dentist's waiting room last week. Herbert was not an old chap in his 70s but a sweet little boy of 5/6. All 3 of my DS burst out laughing at the name.

The poor mother looked at my 15, 13 & 12 year old DS.....I did tell them off later.

Tortington · 10/04/2009 15:09

i wouldn't call my kid anything that could be construde by another kid as being anything related to a dick piercing.

KingRolo · 10/04/2009 15:08

Albert is v fashionable again now - a great name!

Ernest... still undecided but think I quite like it.

My father's middle name was Ernest, he died young and I would love to have used it for a DS, unfortunately his first name was almost as dire and I wouldn't inflict either on my DSs. The fact that my grandparents had odd taste was no reason to pass it on!

DiamondHead · 10/04/2009 14:52

By nice comments - ds is now 6 and I do get people saying they love his name. He's past the stage where there's any need for his name to be mentioned. I'm aware there are people who'll dislike it.

Roger can never make a comeback. All that comes in my head is
'and then I gave her a damn good rodgering.'

tummytickler · 10/04/2009 14:29

I love Ernest - dc4 was nearly an Ernest and we might consider it for dc5, but i fear it may become popular, i hear it mentioned more and more

piscesmoon · 10/04/2009 14:18

Sorry-I didn't write that sentence very well Seeker-I was agreeing with you-it was a silly thing for me to have said!

piscesmoon · 10/04/2009 14:16

I expect everyone would be positive to your face DiamondHead-I would think of something nice to say-despite privately not liking it.
Someone likes every name seeker! Hence all the Elsies,Stanleys, Hectors,Mabels etc.
I expect if I was to ask if people liked Muriel, Mildred, Ethel, Malcolm, Nigel and Norman at least one person would say they loved them! Give it 10 years and Roger may make a comeback!

HensMum · 10/04/2009 14:16

Albert is lovely, though not as good as Alfred, IMHO.
Don't like Ernest at all, sorry.

pranma · 10/04/2009 14:05

Albert[Bertie]is lovely less sure about Ernest though, you could tell him he was found in a handbag though lol!

DiamondHead · 10/04/2009 14:02

You can't go wrong with an Albert.

We've had loads of positive comments, only one negative ever.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 10/04/2009 13:56

Albert - great
Ernest - not

seeker · 10/04/2009 13:56

piscesmoon. There is no such name. Can't remember whether you were on my thread where I suggested Roger - there were people who liked it!

MIAeatingeggs · 10/04/2009 13:56

I really like Albert but not Ernest. Albert is good as it is and the nicknames are all good too.

frisbyrat · 10/04/2009 13:52

Alby is very cool. Not sure if it suits a baby, though.

piscesmoon · 10/04/2009 13:52

I thought that Ernest would be one name that people couldn't possibly like!
Ernie also horrible.
Albert is slightly better but I still don't like it.

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 10/04/2009 13:50

I have an Uncle Ernie, and he used to be teased about his second name 'ben' when he was in school.

Just wait long enough, ant it'll be here we go again!

ItsMargotBeaurEGGarde · 10/04/2009 13:49

Ernest if you must.

Albumen comes to mind if you shorten Albert to Albie. Think I prefer either Robert with Bertie for short or Alfred with Freddie for short. Al is very blah.

tartetatin · 10/04/2009 13:48

My 3rd DS is due in two weeks and the front runner for him is Albert. Can be Albie or Bertie, both v cute in my opinion. Can't say Ernest does it for me though.

Niecie · 10/04/2009 13:48

Neither

Ernest/Ernie - drove the fastest milk cart in the West.

Albert marginally better but stil won't be a name a little boy will grow into until he is about 70.

VeryAnnieMary · 10/04/2009 13:46

I love both & know a v cute Albie

LongDroopyBoobyLady · 10/04/2009 13:41

Albie is very cool.
