I need help! my baby girl is 4 weeks old and we still can't decide on her name. in a real dilemma between Martha and Josie. Any thoughts on either name? which shall we go for?

thanks puppy monkey, you're right, i do need to get a grip... i always thought people who can't decide what to call their baby once they're born are a little flakey and here I am....i think the decision gets harder not easier though!

Love love love Josephine - can be shortened as a NN to Josie, Joey... etc. etc. I would have it but I have a Joseph

ducdo · 07/04/2009 12:42

My votes for Martha .. very sweet and unusual too

Boco · 07/04/2009 12:39

I like Martha best. And am put off Josie by the fact that here in Suffolk it's pronounced 'juicy'. I was genuinely stumped when this woman said to me 'hello I'm juicy'. I did until I realised.

LilRedWG · 07/04/2009 12:38

Mine is pronounced Jo-see (she's Irish if that makes a difference).

PuppyMonkey · 07/04/2009 12:35

My mum's name is Josie, so I pick that.

Seriously, though, four weeks and still no decision???? Get a grip!

MumOfBaby · 07/04/2009 12:32

Marth- it's got to be!!

Or joscelyn.

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 12:19

I prefer Josie when pronounced Jo-zee (rhyming with Rosie). I think it seems that the votes are swinging that way! that's refreshing, most people I've asked out of my family and friends prefer Martha and don't get Josie as a name.... I still love both names!

Well, my 2-yr-old DD suits Josie - and it suited my grandmother too! So I think it works for an adult as well as a child. I am biased tho'.

Martha is also lovely.

Congratulations on your baby girl.

PistachioLemon · 07/04/2009 12:08

Why not both? Martha Joceline or Joceline Martha.

My aunt is called Jocelyn and is called Jocelyn, Joss or Jocy (sounds like Jossy) but never Jo or Josie (sounds like Jozy).

If going for one only I would go for Joceline (obviously!)and shorten it for every day nickname. She can then choose her own nickname as she grows older.

Wigglesworth · 07/04/2009 12:04

Josie is nicer, Martha is too old fashioned for me.

EasterEggsintheSky · 07/04/2009 12:00

Definitely prefer Josie (Jo-see) but couldn't it be short for Joanna as well? In fact, any name starting with Jo could have Josie as a nn.

ForeverOptimistic · 07/04/2009 11:55

I prefer Martha. I want to like Josie but it just doesn't do it for me.

Cadmum · 07/04/2009 11:54

I know two Josies One is pronounced Joezee (from the UK) the other is Joesee (from Canada). Not sure that the nationality is relevant though...

sandpebbles · 07/04/2009 11:54

I love the name Josie. Don't like Martha as much.
congratulations on your new baby

TaurielTest · 07/04/2009 11:54

If it's really just between those two, toss a coin (heads for Josie, tails for Martha), then see how you feel deep down about what comes out. If you're disappointed, pick the other name.
Sounds daft but often works for me when I'm stuck with a binary choice

Plonker · 07/04/2009 11:53

Definitely Josie, lovely name ...and Josephine is really pretty with lots of variations of nn's (Jo, Josie, Fifi)

I like Jodie too

I really don't like Martha. I know that it's increasing in popularity so I'm in a minority with disliking it.

Cadmum · 07/04/2009 11:52

I would prefer Josie.

Josceline is a beautiful name that can be shortened to Josie but I don't find Josie babyish...

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:52

are these Josies you know pronounced 'Josee' or 'Jozee'?

  • don't really need to say what I think..... My dd was named after my granny and is still unusual round my way.
tessofthedurbervilles · 07/04/2009 11:50

she may end up being a jo if you go for Josie.
I like Martha most....

MrsHappy · 07/04/2009 11:49

I do find names ending "-ie" a bit cutesy in general, but of course my view of a name entirely depends on the person wearing it!

If you just like Josie and not the longer versions, go for it.

Not a bad dilemma you've got, choosing between two nice names!

muminmuddle · 07/04/2009 11:48

I hadn't realised just how popular Martha was becoming.

and not sure I like Josephine enough as a name, hadn't thought of Joseline......

hmmm.... really, i'm in a genuine dilemma... neither me or my other half can make up our minds.

I know a 60 something Josie and she was far from cute. Not a strong matriarchal woman though so unlikely to be the same one Lil!

LilRedWG · 07/04/2009 11:39

I know a 60-something Josie! A strong, matriarchal (sp?) woman - fab name for child or adult.
