Yes, it's KathArine or CathErine

Ladyem · 13/08/2009 12:12

I have DD who is Catherine - DH prefered this spelling and I didn't really mind which way it was spelled! We still shorten to Katie with no problems.

I have a friend who is Katharine and she said she has spent her life having to correct people and it drives her mad! (Katharine Hepburn has this spelling and was who her Dad decided to name her after!) Do you daughter a favour and spell it either Katherine or Catherine, then all you get asked is 'is that with a C or a K?'

SpawnChorus · 12/08/2009 19:12

Katherine

cherrylips · 12/08/2009 19:11

I am a Katharine too. Yes its more traditional than Katherine, because its more akin to the ancient Greek spelling of the name. I like the fact that there are so many different ways to spell my name. Once I've pointed out the A, its rarely forgotten.

southernsoftie · 12/08/2009 08:41

Given this was months ago you have probably had the baby by now but I was always told Katharine is the Scottish or traditional version. it will be misspelt whatever verison of Katherine/Catherine/Katharine you choose though.

Katharine Hepburn spelt it that way, so that is good enough for me!

PfftTheMagicDragon · 08/04/2009 15:45

Have you considered Petal Blossom Rainbow?

CaptainKarvol · 08/04/2009 15:39

I have a Katherine, so biased! We use the long name, but are mentally holding Kat and Kitty and Kate in reserve as nns. If I'd thought of the lovely nn Cassie, I might have been tempted to go for the Catherine spelling though

Love Rebecca too, but not 'Becky'. Reba is a nice shortning though.

GrapefruitMoon · 08/04/2009 15:34

If I was choosingmy own spelling I would go for Katharine rather than any of the other options - I think it looks better with the a rather than e and prefer it with a K rather than C

I love Georgina too (though hate George for some inexplicable reason!)

Think Rebecca is too popular at the moment - but don't dislike it.

minesacheeseandpicklesandwich · 08/04/2009 15:10

Sleepless We are very traditional in this household. Elizabeth would have been on the list too, but we know too many of them!

I figure if she wants a different, 'funky' name then she can pick it herself when she's a teenager. I started out with one version of my name, went to a shortened version as a teenager, then went back to the original once I was in my twenties. If my mum had called me by the shortened one, I'd have never had the choice.

I like Joanna.

I like 'em all really.

Ronaldinhio · 08/04/2009 00:00

Catherine

Concordia · 07/04/2009 23:47

I prefer Katherine and think this is less likely to be misspelt than with an 'a'.
Also like Rebecca but dislike Georgina (not keen on adaptations of boy's names)

sleeplessinstretford · 07/04/2009 22:20

i have five sisters- Called Joanna Marie, Elizabeth Veronica, Ruth Catherine, Me (I am a Sarah Jane) Catherine Margaret and Rebecca Ellen- you have the same taste as my parents....

dinkymum · 07/04/2009 21:52

Rebecca

minesacheeseandpicklesandwich · 07/04/2009 21:44

Thank-you for all the comments. I'm really surprised that everyone's been so nice about my selection!

DP has just added Joanna to the list...

DD1's middle name is Katharine - I also thought it was the more traditional way to spell it. I think it looks better too!

pointydog · 07/04/2009 19:53

I'd probably go for Katherine (Kate)

pointydog · 07/04/2009 19:52

regina is far too similar to vagina

smartiejake · 07/04/2009 19:40

Georgina is lovely but how about Regina- can also be shortened to Gina

janeite · 07/04/2009 19:20

Rebecca is best imho.

popsypie · 07/04/2009 19:18

Love Rebecca - it is my daughter's middle name and my best friend and her godmother's name. It is gorgeous and has plenty of variations for your little one to play with when she is older and wants to be called a different name at school etc.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 07/04/2009 11:09

The best thing about Katharine (any spelling) is that it is infinitely versatile - Kate, Katy, Kitty, Kathy, Kat, Kath....

elkiedee · 07/04/2009 00:13

Katharine with 2 a's is a family name (and my middle name). I always understood it was an Irish spelling. I would choose that spelling for that reason, family tradition. But it is likely to mean your dd will regularly have her name spelt wrong - where my middle name is included on official documents it's probably wrong more often than not. But then my very simple but not that common surname is frequently misspelled too.

Plonker · 07/04/2009 00:02

Katharine (kate/kitty) is my fav by far

Not keen on Rebecca and really don't like Georgina

sleeplessinstretford · 06/04/2009 23:01

I have a sister called Catherine and one called Rebecca- love both of them.My eldest daughter is a Catherine but we've only ever called her Katie/Kate. My sister
Rebecca and my friend Rebecca have only ever been called Rebecca-none of the shortened versions. Georgina was on my list for daughter number 2 but a few people said it sounded like we wanted a boy and had just stuck an 'ina' on the end of george....
