Dorothy and Penelope

What do you think of Dorothy and Penelope?
I love Dorothy but i am a bit worried that it might have a huge revival and there will be 4 in the class! Same Penelope.
So could they be the next big thing? I like to try and give dcs names that wont date too much (ds have biblical for example), so would hate them to become very 'of the moment'.
Still loving Jean though

I like Penelope - Penny is a cute nickname for a little girl, and the full name is very elegant for when she's grown up.

Dorothy sounds a bit old lady-ish to me, same for Jean (though I would probably have said the same about Ruby, Grace, Martha etc until they suddenly became popular for babies again!).

zenoushka · 09/08/2010 13:37

I love Penelope! Penelope Grace sounds really pretty.

Margeaux · 08/08/2010 22:34

My DD's nn is Dot Smile

My one year old Daughter is called Dorothy, and Dottie for short! People either love it or hate it

PheasantPlucker · 05/04/2009 12:43

One of my Godmothers is Hilda. (She is 80). She is lovely. I therefore love the name. We will not have any more children, but I will certainly aim to use the name Hilda for a pet in the future to compensate!

Nancy66 · 05/04/2009 12:39

I've got a bit of a thing for Jean at the moment - think i'd only ever use it as a middle name but I do like it.

Don't like Penelope or Dorothy though - they're too prim

loobylu3 · 05/04/2009 08:33

Penelope is lovely but only if not shortened to Penny. I love the nn Nell.
Dorothy is nice too but prefer Dorothea too.
Both so much nicer than Jean imo!!

RachieB · 04/04/2009 22:48

Dorothy is better than Hilda!

Penny is my fave of the lot though

MadBadandDangerousToKnow · 04/04/2009 22:09

Penelope and Dorothy are lovely names. Dottie, however, is an abomination. As is Jean.

tummytickler · 04/04/2009 22:07

Alishanty - Hilda is our other top - probably the real number1/2 as Hilda and Jean are the only onees dh and i agree on 100%

If you like them then choose the one you prefer, or if you cannot choose between them, then let your oh decide!

KingRoloEgg · 04/04/2009 22:01

Dorothy is a lovely name .

Alishanty · 04/04/2009 22:01

My gran's real name was Dorothy, think it was like the Ruby/Grace of her day as she always went by her middle name of Hilda as Dorothy was too common! Maybe it is due a revival.

JaquelinehydeAllTheEggs · 04/04/2009 21:59

Dorothy and Penelope I love both are beautiful.

Also love Victoria.

everGreensleeves · 04/04/2009 21:55

I like Thea, it's pretty. Dorothea is nice in its own right too. I don't like Penelope, but that's for personal association reasons

Love Dorothea.

Strangely don't like Dorothy though.

Have never liked Penelope. My wee brother always read it as 'Penny-lope' and could never say the name. Mind you he read Siobhan as 'Si-oh-ban'.

Marthasmama · 04/04/2009 21:49

Penny is a lovely nick name, but that might be because I knew a really lovely girl called Penny.
