Whats wrong with being posh?

I like it.

ladyjuliafish · 02/04/2009 11:34

Its my ds's name so obviously I like it. There are different ways of spelling it due to there being different names with the same pronunciation with Germanic, Arabic and Hebrew roots. I've never quite understood what is meant by too posh.

duchesse · 02/04/2009 11:32

I would really love to know what makes a name "pretentious" or "chavvy". I really wish that people would just stick to statements such as "I like it" or "I wouldn't name my child that", without imputing some kind of universal value judgment on things. It's one person's opinion, not a statement of fact.

Anyway, I reckon that 1940s names such as Ralph and Virginia are (over)due a revival. All the decades around them have been.

Disenchanted, what a wierd post. I have just googled the family, and my spelling is correct. What an odd thing to make of their name.

lunamoon2 · 01/04/2009 23:12

I like it, but spelt Ralph, do agree however that people would pronounce it R a l f. I suppose that once they know how to pronounce it then that will be the end of the matter.

Word of warning: when I asked for a consenseus of opinion on the name once (though do add it was pre-Apprentice Ralph) my friends fell about laughing quite uncontrollably_

paolosgirl · 01/04/2009 22:41

It is Ralph Trying Hard to be something it's not.

Raphael shortened is better.

duchesse · 01/04/2009 22:39

I know a lovely little 2 yr old Ralph (pronounced Rafe) so am biased.

Disenchanted3 · 01/04/2009 22:39

Rafe Van Cutsem? ... rape and cuts em?

is that a joke? its not funny if so

bettany · 01/04/2009 22:36

Love this name. Good on its own and as a shortening of Raphael or Rafael. Recently saw in Times baby names a Rafe Van Cutsem (not shortened from anything), close pals of Royal family, so it might be posh but is still lovely.

My first reaction was rape - not a good first connection for a name!!!
Don't like it sorry

Not so keen.

Love Rafferty though, Raff, Raffy

Nancy66 · 31/03/2009 22:47

Funnybunnyyumyum · 31/03/2009 22:32

ilikeyoursleeves · 31/03/2009 22:10

Just reminds me of Raef from The Apprentice! Seems like a very 'posh' name.

screamingabdab · 31/03/2009 22:04

Sorry, too "posh"
Will be constantly mis-spelled

noonki · 31/03/2009 22:03

sorry too posh for my liking.

Like ralph gone wrong.

janeite · 31/03/2009 21:57

Dislike, sorry.

hedgiemum · 31/03/2009 21:56

I like Rafe. Know a few - all spelt that way. Know one with a bro called Arthur, which I also like.

Disenchanted3 · 31/03/2009 21:53

Wraith - angel of death,

Rafe, not for me!

If you were shouting 'Rafe' in a supermarket it does sound like your being seriously sexually assaulted.
