Do you struggle when you see your DCs names in this topic and when people say they don't like it do you feel a bit angry?

Or am I just mad???

I don't mind if they say "It's not my cup of tea" but when they say "It's poncey" or "it's chavey". I recently saw someone say that my DS1's name was "stuffy" I almost feel like I should defend my boys names.

I think I might stay away from here in future.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Wallace · 29/03/2009 08:33

My ds1's name is mentioned on most awful/ponciest names to call your kids. I'm past caring now, but it did hurt a bit at first.

Dd's name is loved by a selct few, but they would all spell it the Gaelic way.

Ds2's name is becoming quite common in England, but I don't know any in Scotland. It is quite often mentioned as a nice name.

georgimama · 29/03/2009 07:50

Is her name Honey by any chance glucose?

I really can't wait to get up the duff again and start my own (real) baby names thread. I am going to come up with the most poncetastic names I can think of. Am getting quite keen on St John....

piscesmoon · 28/03/2009 22:47

I am profoundly grateful to have a 'boring' name-much better than having one that dates you, is embarrassing, you have to spell or explain everytime.

glucose · 28/03/2009 22:42

According to the good and wise MN my dd's name is too childish for when she is a grown up (words to that effect) something like 'how many hot shot lawyers do you know called - -'
okey dokey

seeker · 28/03/2009 22:41

I'm always puzzled by this. Do people really, on being introduced to a grown up called - for example, James, - think "Oh what a boring name!"?

piscesmoon · 28/03/2009 22:36

My DCs names always come up as boring-I don't mind in the least-I love boring names!

shonaspurtle · 28/03/2009 22:29

Were you on that thread with your lightning-fast namechanging reflexes? I suspected lapin at the time, who also had form on that score.

I believe there may have been a North/South misunderstanding vis a vis it not actually being a made up weirdy name. Sometimes it's quite hard on the phone to convince people it's not a made up name, to be fair.

Anyhoo.

oldspeckledtam · 28/03/2009 20:30

My daughters name has been described as posh and horsey.

My sons name was branded mean, sneaky and weak.

He is only 15days old so no, I didn't let it affect my decision! :O

AitchTwoOh · 28/03/2009 20:21

come on, your name veh glamorous, shona...

cupofteaplease · 28/03/2009 20:11

I think my dd2's name is more popular on MN than in real life (Mabel), but I still see people on these threads slating it. I don't mind, they don't know MY Mabel, so I don't care

Kwini · 28/03/2009 15:03

"I just assume they must have no taste. Especially when I see the names they do like"

LOL - yes, indeed!

Kwini · 28/03/2009 15:00

"what sort of name is that" comment...........so I set them straight and told them it was a very normal name thank you very much, it just so happens it's not a English name

I find those comments really annoying. As if people living in England should only name their children Susan and George. (Nothing wrong with Susan and George, btw!)

FWIW, I've quite liked it when people say they don't get or don't like names I've posted for comment - it means my kids won't have to share their names with dozens of others

SlartyBartFast · 28/03/2009 14:52

ds' name is not popular, i was somewhat surprised when i first came across the unpopularity on mn.

dd2's name popular, well liked by some of course, never all.

dd3 name, not really mentioned, strangely, there are 3 in her gymnastics class!

seeker · 28/03/2009 14:48

Shame. I was at university with her!

shonaspurtle · 28/03/2009 14:35

pmsl no.

seeker · 28/03/2009 14:30

I presume you're not really the actress S R, are you Shona???? Or are you? Don't answer that!!!

shonaspurtle · 28/03/2009 11:48

I don't know, they were just having a laugh - no offense taken really.

Not that there's anything funny about the name Arabella Cholmondely-Pussey in any case **Disclaimer: my name is actually quite ordinary - I don't know why it caught the eye!

TheJester · 28/03/2009 11:46

wow, that's extreme shona! you can't really mock an adult for their own name! That was out of their hands. Did Cod mean that she couldn't believe it was your REAL name.

shonaspurtle · 28/03/2009 11:35

The only time I ever got a bit ruffled about a name on mn was when cod weirdly spotted my rl name against a posting on the BBC or somesuch and came on here going arf arf ponce. Who has a name liek Xxxx Xxxx?

And then everyone started changing their posting names to versions of my rl name and posing around going oooh I'm Xxxx Xxxx la la la.

And that was a little

Other than that, if we all liked the same baby names there'd be even more angsting over name stealing and the like.

TheJester · 28/03/2009 11:27

Somebody once did a whole page of "no" repeated over and over and over again for my son's name!! But I didn't mind. Lots of people whose taste was more similar to my own made comments like 'oh I'll add that to my list". So I think if you're thick skinned you filter out the comments of posters whose taste you don't share anyway!!

I mean in real life, if I'm wheeling baby Rufus out and about and somebody who called their baby Andrew or Jaden makes a face (you know, theeeee face) and says "is that a family name?" you don't care do you!!!! Cos you know you are thinking the same about their child's name!

(My son isn't called Rufus btw, but I like that name, and my son'sname is a love or hate name as I have learned reading this board)

belgo · 28/03/2009 11:23

I recently saw my own name being slated on here, that didn't make me happy.

I think we should all remember to try and be polite.

YesSirICanBoogie · 28/03/2009 11:21

My DD's name was listed on here as being a chav name of tomrrow. I love it and it's not common at all in Scotland!

Plonker · 27/03/2009 22:35

Hmmm, it does bother me a little, I must admit. I try to bear in mind that everyone else is tasteless and mad is entitled to have different tastes to me

I have had a number of opinions voiced about my dd's names.
Dd1's name is apparantly extremely dull, dd2's name is a nickname, too cutesy and very common (not actually been called chavvy yet, but I think its a matter of time ...) and dd3's name is apparantly very common too and if you throw a stone, you'll hit one.

Ah well, I love them

dizzydixies · 27/03/2009 22:27

sorry, typing habit as thats the name of my dneice

FAQinglovely · 27/03/2009 22:24

and if by some stroke of luck I did get my 4th and it turned out to be twins (there are twins on my mums side of the family......) then boys errrm pass

Girls would be the Alexis Yananai and Chelsea "something"

I now know (thanks to MN ) that Chelsea is a chav name - but I don't care - think they go very nicely together
