OK, Now we're sure we're having a girl, we have two names:

  1. Millie
* Emily * Millicent
  1. Martha

It's just for fun, really, because we won't decide until she's born, but which one would you go for? (or suggest another!!!!)

Middle names:
Grace / Kate / Alice (only one, obviously!)

Thanks, HM

Millie, but NOT
Millie Alice, which is too may llie / li sounds
And not Martha Alice because it doesn't sound good when a vowel sound at the end of a name runs into a voew at the beginning of the next.

Millie and Martha both nice, though.

FairLadyRantALot · 25/03/2009 18:24

rofl at teh ugly Baby discussion....es and ys both looked handsome straightaway, but ms was bogugly (well, I didn't see it at the time though ), oddly enough though, once he gotten out of newborn state he was gorgeous, he was actually seriously pretty, and many people mistaken him for a girl, lol...

As for the biblical Martha thing....well....Martha not a name I am keen on, but don't blame Martha at all for complaining about the hosuework...I think in my heart I am a Martha, lol

BalloonSlayer · 25/03/2009 13:40

Background: Martha was the sister in the Bible who complained that she had to do all the housework. IIRC Jesus told her nicely to shut up and get on with it

Thus in churches the team of women who clean the church and polish the brass etc are often called "the Marthas."

(This is where The Handmaid's Tale bit comes from.)

I like the name Martha but I know what Custardo means about ugly names. We love the name Mary, butit sounds very plain with our surname. I kept thinking she would be short and fat like MIL if we called her Mary. Luckily "she" was DS1 so we didn't have to worry.

LadyKitty · 25/03/2009 13:40

Emily Maria,our dds name

Tortington · 25/03/2009 13:34

i love it when i'm right.

ps. i think all babies are ugly i have only ever seen one beautiful baby in my life - it just so happened it was ds1. the twins were well ugly.

and it was a consideration for me in the delivery room - we were thinking of beth, with again like martha or ruth, i think its one of those ugly names - if you have an ugly kid.

so changed my choice. good job too 'cos dd was the ugliest baby i ever did see.

Haribosmummy · 25/03/2009 13:26

I think custardo has a good point... My two DSDs are very pretty (the little one is a VERY successful model!) and DS is gorgeous too (he also has a modelling contract!!) so, while there is every reason to think DDTB will also be pretty, if she wasn't (or even wasn't as pretty as the rest of them), I wouldn't want to saddle her with the wrong name!!

I would like to think 'I'll wait till she's born', but I tohught DS looked just like an alien - An alien I adored from day one, but an alien none the less!

Looks like it's Millie - that will just be a nickname name... she will have alonger 'full' name!!

nope - martha is an ugly name - if you have an ugly baby.

beautiful name if you have a beautiful kid - sorry to piss on your parade but what if your kid doesn't grow up to be conventionally pretty - or a kid only a mother could love

am just saying, its a dog rough name if your kids a bit mingin'

RachieB · 25/03/2009 11:42

Emily Grace ,lovely

weepootle · 25/03/2009 11:37

I love Martha and love Kate, so Martha Kate for me. All lovely though, only Alice I'm not keen on.

BonyM · 25/03/2009 11:17

Martha Grace gets my vote. Too many Millies around at the moment.

nigglewiggle · 25/03/2009 10:17

I like Martha - so there!

EdwardBear · 25/03/2009 10:17

Martha is lovely

sonniebonnie · 25/03/2009 10:14

There is nothing 'ugly' about a name like Martha, Arabella or any other name.... We may, however, associate the name with someone ugly with that name... Or someone very beautiful... but that is down to our own personal experiences!

LaundryFairy · 25/03/2009 10:13

According to the Guardian, Millie is number 21 in most popular names, Amelia is number 11, Emily is number 4, but Martha is 86. On that basis alone (never mind that Martha is so lovely) I would choose Martha.

MadameCastafiore · 25/03/2009 10:00

I know loads of Millies - 2 Millicents and one just Millie - not sure about the others.

I like Martha and don't think it an ugly name - Arrabella on the other hand is a fat, ugly girls name!

sonniebonnie · 25/03/2009 09:57

Agree that Millie/Emily/Amelie/Amelia is so common/boring that I wouldn't use any of those.

I really like Martha - its classic, feminine, beautiful and not that common (yet)!

Jojay · 25/03/2009 09:25

Not keen on Martha or Millie.

I like Emily Alice, or Emily Grace.

I prefer 'proper' names and to me, Millie and Kate are shortenings of full names.

Fine as a nickname though.

MarchNowFebMum · 25/03/2009 09:23

Only like Emily but love all the middle names, eve though they are tres populaire right now if you care

Agree with custardo - Martha could go very wrong

Sorrento · 25/03/2009 09:21

I love Martha, Milly's been done to death with Amelie, Amelia and Emily IMO

WowOoo · 25/03/2009 09:15

Millie Alice, Martha Alice, Millie Kate, Martha Kate. in that order for me!

See what she looks like when she pops out. All lovely names though.

jellybeans · 25/03/2009 09:12

Emily Grace. Martha too 'of the moment'.

maddylou · 25/03/2009 08:17

Millie Kate -lovely

belgo · 25/03/2009 08:04

Emily or Martha, both on my shortlist for names.

Haribosmummy · 25/03/2009 08:02

Also... at Custardo!!!!

I haven't (obviously!) considered the possibility of having an ugly child!!!!!

Haribosmummy · 25/03/2009 07:59

at millipede!!!

Hadn't thought of Amelia either, so that's worth considering too!!

Just one quick question, though: Is Millie really that common (popular!) - I honestly don't know any and, with a 10 month old DS, I know LOADS of babies and haven't heard of one Millie

thanks for all the comments. They are much appreciated!
